Mirta Gonzalez
Jul 26, 1938 — May 19, 2026
Mirta Gonzalez passed away peacefully on May 19, 2026, at the age of 87, surrounded by her loving family and devoted caregivers. A cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, respected educator, and lifelong resident of Tampa, Mirta lived a life defined by love, grace, strength, and service to others.
Born on July 26, 1938, in Ybor City, Florida, Mirta was the daughter of Aurelio Garcia and Ramona Cacciatore Garcia. She was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved husband, Albert Gonzalez.
Mirta and Albert began their lifelong love story at the age of 14 while attending George Washington Junior High School. They continued together through Jefferson High School and the University of Tampa, sharing those formative years with many friends who remained dear to them throughout their lives. Their marriage was a testament to enduring love, companionship, and devotion.
For more than 40 years, Mirta dedicated herself to education, touching the lives of countless students and earning the admiration of fellow educators. Her patience, compassion, wisdom, and commitment to teaching left a lasting impression on generations of young people and on the community she served so faithfully.
Mirta’s greatest joy was her family. She treasured summers at the beach, keeping score at Mark’s Little League games at Wellswood, spending time with close friends, and, above all, being surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
She will be remembered for her kindness, elegance, strength, wisdom, and unwavering love for those around her. Mirta had a wonderful sense of style and a love of fashion, always carrying herself with grace, polish, and confidence. Her warm heart, impeccable taste, and lifelong devotion to family and education will remain an enduring legacy.
Mirta is survived by her daughter, State Representative Karen Gonzalez Pittman, and her husband, Dr. Chris Pittman; her son, Mark Gonzalez, and his wife, Elaine Harshbarger; her grandchildren, Isabella Pittman Farrell and her husband, Peter, Alexandra Pittman, Jonathan Pittman, and Matthew Pittman; and her great-granddaughters, Brielle and Valerie.
Though she will be deeply missed, Mirta’s legacy lives on in the family she cherished, the students she inspired, and the many lives enriched by her love, wisdom, and grace.
The family extends its sincere gratitude for the prayers, love, and support offered during this difficult time.
