Clark J. Holloway
Jan 30, 1958 — Jun 19, 2026
It is with great sadness we share that on June 19, 2026, Clark J. Holloway shuffled off this mortal coil with family by his side. Born January 30, 1958, in Centralia, WA, to Burton B. Holloway and Harriet I. Scott (Holloway) Voss, Clark grew up in Oakville, WA, graduated from Tumwater High School in Tumwater, WA, and attended the University of Washington.
Clark went on to a remarkable career at the Washington State Department of Licensing, where he retired with over 40 years of public service. Known for his indomitable intellect, Clark was respected by colleagues and leaders alike; his limitless knowledge of all things driver licensing influenced hundreds of laws and policies that have improved safety for millions of Washington citizens. His knowledge, mentorship, humor, and unwavering passion will be remembered by everyone fortunate enough to have worked with him. He leaves behind a legacy not just of expertise, but of the people he inspired and helped along the way.
His private scholarship was made evident by the extensive collection of literature in his library and the knowledge and passion he devoted to his most beloved historical figure, Napoleon Bonaparte. His in-depth and nuanced understanding of history in general, and American history in particular, made him an invaluable resource.
Clark's intellect fueled his quick wit and jovial sense of humor; he always filled any room with joy and laughter. In his younger years Clark enjoyed accompanying his friends sailing and windsurfing in the Columbia Gorge. Clark would participate as the videographer, filming and enlisting his friends to act out parts in hilarious short films he would create and direct. This seriously unserious side of Clark is also evident in his collection of comics, movies, and pop memorabilia. Clark especially loved objectively bad sci-fi and horror movies. He often stayed up to the wee hours watching the most obscure B movies ever made and never failed to provide a synopsis for those unlucky enough not to have viewed or ever heard of the film.
Clark left an indelible mark on far more people than he ever realized. He will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by his family, a plethora of friends, and former colleagues. He is survived by his sister LuWana (Ron) Hawley and brothers Scott (Lynda) Holloway and Paul (Christy) Voss, nieces Jillian Holberg, Payton Hawley, and Delaney Hawley, Nephews Aaron Berg, Bryce Johnson, Colby Johnson, and Jared Johnson, and numerous great nieces and nephews.
