Darrin Race
Jan 11, 1966 — Aug 22, 2026
Darrin Eugene Race was born January 11, 1966, in Dover, Delaware. He passed at home with his family by his side, on August 22, 2026, in Olympia, Washington, leaving behind the memory of a man whose presence was steady, creative, and deeply felt by those who knew and loved him.
Many chapters of his life carried him across many places and devotion that followed. He lived in England, in Streator Illinois, and Olympia, Washington. Gathering along the way the experiences, friendships, and stories that made him unmistakably himself. He attended Timberline High School and SPSCC College.
As a general contractor in commercial and residential construction. A man remembered in simple and fitting words: he built everything. That description captures not only his work, but something essential about the way he moved through life. He was drawn to making, fixing, shaping, and improving. He always had a project, and his hands and mind were rarely still for long.
Outside of work, Darrin embraced life with energy and a love of movement, beauty, and open air. He enjoyed vacations in the sun, Harley Davidsons, floating the rivers, stacking rocks, boating, music, and art. These were not just pastimes, but reflections of a spirit that found joy in freedom, creation, and the simple pleasures of being fully present in the world.
One of the happiest moments of his life was his marriage to Laura Barte on February 29, 2019, in New Zealand. That memory stands as a bright and enduring part of the story he leaves behind.
Darrin is survived by his mother, Sue Reynolds; wife, Laura Jean Barte. He is also survived, by his daughters, Taylar Thompson and Hanna Mays; by his brothers, Don Race Jr. and Luke Reynolds; by his sister, Connie Race; by Connie’s children, Amanda Marcella and Tony Marcella; and by his grandchild, Harlan Thompson and his beloved dog Barney. Together, these family ties formed the circle of love that surrounded his life and remained with him to the end.
He was preceded in death by his father, Don Race Sr. and his grandparents, Victor and Olive Voisey of England. Their memory remained part of the foundation from which his own life was built.
Darrin’s passing brings deep sorrow, and his family’s grief is matched by gratitude for the years, laughter, work, adventures, and love they shared with him. He will be remembered as a great man taken too soon, a builder in every sense, and someone whose life left a lasting mark on the people and places around him.
A service in his memory with be determined at a later date.
