Hershal E. Overbey

Hershal E. Overbey passed away on September 18, 2026, in Olympia, Washington. He was born on January 3, 1932, in Harris, Arkansas, and lived a long life marked by devotion to his work, deep love for his family, and enjoyment of the simple pleasures that brought people together.

For many years, Hershal worked as a Millwright at ITT Raynior Pulp and Paper Company, serving from 1957 until 2002. His long career reflected dedication, steadiness, and a strong work ethic. Outside of work, he found happiness in coaching Little League and in spending time fishing, camping, traveling, and gardening. He was known as a very loving man and a sweetheart who especially enjoyed being with family and friends.

A meaningful part of Hershal’s life was the family he built and cherished. He married Vivian Prante in Elma, Washington, in June of 1950, and she preceded him in death in 2011. He later remarried Monica Bricken in September of 2012 in Rodchester, Washington. His life was enriched by the many years he shared with those he loved.

Hershal is survived by his daughter, Carolyn Strom; his sons, Dennis Overbey, Bob Overbey, and Dan Overbey; his sister, Betty Bosler; and by fourteen grandchildren,  ten great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. He took great joy in being surrounded by family, and his love for them remained at the center of his life.

He was preceded in death by his father, Cleetis Overbey, and his mother, Edith Overbey; by his brothers, John, Paul, Robert, Billy, and Jimmy Overbey; by his sisters, Nora, Juanita and Virgie; and by his son, Dean Overbey. The memory of those who went before him remained part of the story of his life and family.

A memorial service for Hershal E. Overbey will be held on October 24, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Funeral Alternatives of Washington - Tumwater, 455 North Street SE, Tumwater, Washington 98501.

Hershal will be remembered for his loving nature, his kindness, his years of hard work, and the happiness he found in family, friendship, and the outdoors. His memory will be carried forward by those who knew him and loved him.
