Nellie

Nelda Marie Ward

December 14, 1949 - August 1, 2025

Nellie passed at dawn on Friday, August 1, 2025.

A long-time resident of Olympia, she grew up in Baker City, Oregon, and graduated from Baker High School. Years later, she graduated from The Evergreen State College.

I am still in shock and find it difficult to accept the loss of my partner, lover, and friend. From slow dancing in the kitchen to walking on the beach and in the forests, memories of Nellie fill my heart.

She was a fierce competitor and a warrior for women’s rights until her passing. A true professional, she took great pride in her work in the construction, natural resources, and agriculture industries. Her fondest memories were working at Camp 1 for Simpson Timber Company.

When you met Nellie, whether at work or on a walk, you knew she was special. Your day was better for having met her.

Her smile was warm and infectious. You couldn’t help but smile, too, when talking with her about anything. She continuously demonstrated the best of those human qualities—love, compassion, kindness, and hope—that we seek out in these times of turmoil and hate. Now there is one less light to guide us along.

I miss you terribly Nellie.

She is survived by her husband, Joe; her son, Eric; her daughters, Kelli and Deborah; seven grandkids; and ten great-grandkids.

A celebration of life for family and friends is planned on her birthday in Olympia.
