Charles Edward Sherer

Charles Edward Sherer, 96, passed peacefully into the presence of his Lord and Savior on June 18, 2026. A devoted Christian, loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, veteran, Mason, and community servant, Charles lived a life defined by faith, integrity, compassion, and service to others.

Born on October 17, 1929, in Lattimore, North Carolina, Charles was the son of the late Henry Walker Sherer and Augusta Head Sherer. He was also preceded in death by his son, Keith Sherer; his sister, Mary Alice Sherer; and his great-grandson, Johnathan Sherer.

Charles proudly served his country in the United States Air Force before dedicating much of his life to his family, his faith, and his Masonic service. He was known as a God-centered man whose kindness, honesty, loyalty, and willingness to help others left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 73 years, Betty Burgin Sherer; his sons, Garry Sherer and wife Melody Wilkins Sherer, and Robert Sherer and wife Suzan Johnston Sherer. He was a proud grandfather to Ryan Capps and husband Justin, Tricia Pou and husband Zack, Kayla Wade, Michael Sherer, and Stacey McCurry and husband Shaun. He was also blessed with great-grandchildren Cailey Capps, Austin Capps, and Joshua Sherer, along with many extended family members, friends, and loved ones who will forever cherish his memory.

Charles devoted more than six decades to Freemasonry and related organizations, earning the respect and admiration of countless brothers and sisters throughout the years. His accomplishments included:

• Master Mason for 62 years

• Certified Lecturer for 55 years

• Past Master and Charter Member of West Gate Masonic Lodge

• Founder of West Gate Lodge under James K. Polk in Pineville

• Member of Oasis Shrine for more than 50 years

• Charter Member of the Metrolina Shrine Club

• 33rd Degree Scottish Rite Mason

• Knight Commander of the Court of Honor (KCCH)

• York Rite Mason for 31 years

• Member of the Order of the Eastern Star since 1971

• Past District Deputy Grand Lecturer

• Past District Historian

• Past Grand Patron of the Order of the Eastern Star at West Gate Chapter

Charles found great purpose in serving others through his Masonic and Shrine affiliations as well as his involvement in both Calvary and Denver Baptist Church. His commitment to charity, fellowship, and leadership touched generations and helped strengthen the many organizations he loved.

Above all, Charles was devoted to his family. He treasured the time spent with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and was a steady source of wisdom, encouragement, and unconditional love. He will be remembered for his faithful service, strong devotion to family, and unwavering commitment to his community.

Though he will be deeply missed, his family finds comfort in knowing that his legacy of faith, leadership, kindness, and service will continue to live on in the lives he touched.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Shriners Children's Home in honor of Charles and his lifelong dedication to helping others in need.
