Dolores (Laurie) Hunter

Jun 1, 1932 — Aug 8, 2026

Dolores (Laurie) Hunter was born on June 1, 1932, in Queens, New York. Her husband of 58 years, James Hunter, passed away in 2012.

Laurie leaves behind four children: Marguerite Rupar and her husband, Dave; James Hunter and his wife, Cathy; Marilyn Jarvill and her husband, Craig; and Michael Hunter and his wife, Donna. She also leaves behind 10 grandchildren and so many great-grandchildren that she lost track at times. But Laurie loved them all fiercely.

Laurie spent the early years of her marriage as an Air Force wife, packing up houses and moving across the United States every two to three years — with the kids in tow, she went from Nebraska to Kansas to Colorado to Massachusetts. There were a lot of changes along the way for this New York City girl, who learned how to bake bread, can jams and escape tornadoes.

Laurie and Jim eventually settled in McLean, Virginia, where they raised their four children. In retirement, they moved to Vero Beach, Florida, and after Jim’s passing, Laurie moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, where she lived at Southminster.

Laurie loved her husband, her children and grandkids; good down-home cooking; reading; fashion; playing the piano; and plants and flowers. Oh, and a scotch at 5 o’clock every evening. She was known for her big personality, strong opinions and great sense of humor. Laurie will be greatly missed by her family, but she leaves behind many stories, everlasting memories and more than a few of her favorite sayings, like “wondermous” and “sainted soul that I am!”

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 9:30am Friday, August 14, 2026 at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, 1621 Dilworth Road E., Charlotte, NC 28203 with interment following at Sharon Memorial Park. A reception at Myers Park Country Club to honor Laurie’s life will start around noon.

Arrangements are under the direction of Hankins and Whittington Funeral Service, Charlotte, NC.

In lieu of flowers, please consider giving to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Boys Town, two of Laurie's favorite charities.
