Barbara A Buchanan

Barbara Buchanan was born on January 27, 1950. She was the second of seven children, born to John Henry and Annie Clyde Sorrow. Affectionately known to all as Papa John and Mama Ann. 

Coming from a large family, you can imagine the number of nieces and nephews that she had. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her brother Joel, Steve, Wayne, and sister Vicky. She is survived by her children: Robby Campbell (Mandi) and Angie Brown (Karl); siblings: Alan Sorrow (Lisa) and Ted Sorrow (Nancy); grandchildren: Taylor, Jaxon, Tri' (Andrea), Justin (Kaysha), AJ (Marie), Barrett, and Wright. Great grandchildren: Elijah, Abram, Blakely, and Carter. 

Barbara married Dani Campbell when she was 18 and he was 17 in 1968. They had two children together, Robert "Robby" Campbell and Bobbie "Angie" Brown. They also were foster parents to two other needy children. She was a mama to every kid in the neighborhood. This carried over into adulthood as she mothered many families and friends' children. Barbara was very well liked and had many true friends. Her lifelong friends, Jan "Stella" and Lenora stayed in contact with her until the very end as have many others. Barbara's friends were a staple around the house and became her children's friends and they still are to this day. 

Family meant everything to Barbara. If you were a friend, you were family. Sundays were her favorite, where she would gather at Papa John and Mama Ann's house to share the day and a meal. It was a day of laughter, crying, joy, and pain. All of the siblings would bring their children and any stray that needed a good meal. All were welcome and all left full. (Full, meaning your belly, your soul, and your batteries to get you through it another week.) It was a true American family from one end of the spectrum to the other and full of pure love. 

Barbara took this love of a family to a much higher level. She acted as a caregiver to her sick siblings. She was the caregiver to her mother and succumb to the same disease as she did. Barbara instilled this love on to her daughter, Angie. Over the past several years, Angie and her husband, Karl took the role of caregiver for her. If you had ever been touched by someone with dementia, you would understand how life-changing that is. A caregiver for someone with dementia gives up their days, nights, weekends, holidays, special events, and just about everything that represents a normal life. It is the most selfless job you can imagine. The pay is low, and there is no reward when your job is done. There is a void, a hole, a piece of oneself gone. However, if you turn to Jesus Christ to fill that void the whole, your cup will overflow. Romans 6:23 says, “the wage of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus, our Lord. King of all kings beginning and the end.” 

A visitation will be held in her honor of Barbara's life on Thursday, September 25, 2025, from 1:00 PM until 1:45 PM at Heritage Memorial Funeral Home. Following, a graveside service will take place at Magnolia Park Cemetery, where friends and family will gather to pay their final respects beginning at 2:00 PM.

Barbara’s legacy will live on through the memories cherished by those who loved her. As we reflect on her life, we are reminded of the light she brought into our world and the love she shared with everyone around her. She will forever remain in the hearts of her loved ones and will be dearly missed.
