Michael Anthony Nelson

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Michael "Mike" Nelson, also known to many as Mike Norgaard, at the age of 73. Born July 27, 1953, in Warner Robins, Georgia, his journey through life was marked by kindness, generosity, music, and service to others.

Michael proudly served his country as a member of the United States Air Force, a chapter of his life defined by loyalty, selflessness, and deep commitment to his country. Following his military service, Michael continued to serve his community as a dedicated civil servant at Robins Air Force Base. There, he fulfilled his responsibilities with tireless diligence, integrity, and a sense of purpose, earning the respect and gratitude of colleagues and all who benefited from his contributions.

Mike was an avid collector who found joy in discovering and preserving many unique treasures throughout his life. He had a deep love for music and enjoyed playing both the guitar and keyboard. Those who knew him will never forget hearing him sing in his unmistakable high tenor voice. His music filled rooms with happiness, and his sense of humor brought smiles and laughter to everyone around him.

He is survived by his loving sisters, Patti Snider and Melody Thompson, who remember him for his steadfast support, warmth, and kindness. His legacy further lives on through his nephews, Paul Ritchey, Mickey Ritchey, Roy Dobson, III, and Paul May, as well as his nieces, Becky Dobson Connelly and Ashley Greene; and several great nieces and nephews. Each of them carries with them special memories, made richer by Mike’s enduring guidance, gentle humor, and sincere care.

He is reunited in rest with his beloved parents, Mervel "Whitey" Norgaard and Julie Sapp Norgaard, and his sister Robin Norgaard May, all of whom held a profound place in his heart.

If there was one thing Uncle Mike loved almost as much as music, it was the weather. He was fascinated by weather patterns and atmospheric conditions. He always seemed to know what was happening in the sky and would often call family just to tell us about the latest forecast, an approaching storm, or an interesting weather event. Those phone calls became one of the many things that made Uncle Mike so uniquely special, and they are memories we will cherish forever.

As his loved ones reflect on Mike’s journey, they honor a man who exemplified loyalty and kindness, and whose memory will remain an enduring presence in their hearts.
