Martha was born July 6, 1936, at the home of her parents, Arthur Wilson Floyd, Sr. and Bessie Lee Floyd of Magee, MS. After graduating from Magee High School in 1954, she attended Mississippi College. She earned a degree in Mathematics in 1957. Hoping to travel the world, Martha joined the US Air Force. Martha served on the School Board from 1980 to 1994 and was President of the School Board from 1989 to 1991.

Martha's major hobbies were genealogy, travel, and reading. Through her research and extensive interviews of extended family, she was able to produce genealogies of her family and Edgar's family. She was an active correspondent with other genealogists for decades.
