Harry Stephen Spencer Hopton

Dr. Harry Stephen Spencer Hopton, 85, of The Villages, Florida, passed away on
Wednesday, July 8, 2026, after fearlessly battling cancer.


Dr. Hopton was born April 21, 1941, in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, to the late John and Jean
Hopton. He played football at Oklahoma State University before earning his dental degree
from the University of Tennessee in Memphis. On July 6, 1968, he married Barbara in
Lubbock, Texas, while stationed there with the United States Air Force.


Dr. Hopton retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Air Force after a
distinguished military career. During his service, he supported Operations Desert Shield
and Desert Storm and was awarded several Meritorious Service Medals in recognition of
his dedication and service. Despite these accomplishments, he never spoke of the
sacrifices he made or sought recognition for his service. He simply did his duty with
humility, quiet strength, and an unwavering commitment to serving others.


Family was one of Dr. Hopton’s greatest joys, and he especially enjoyed spending time with
those he loved. He also had a passion for traveling and playing golf. He will be remembered
as a devoted husband and father whose positive attitude, warm smile, and unwavering
optimism touched everyone who knew him. His legacy of service, integrity, and devotion to
his family will be cherished by all who knew and loved him.


Dr. Hopton is survived by his wife of 58 years, Barbara, of The Villages, Florida; his son,
Stephen (Kelli Lynn) Hopton of Fort Worth, Texas; and daughter, Kelley (Clint) Mansfield of
Valparaiso, Indiana.


Funeral services will be held at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida, at 11:00
a.m., Tuesday, July 21, 2026. Arrangements are by Hiers-Baxley Funeral Services.
