Gail Yvonne Sedberry

August 17, 1955 – September 23, 2026

Gail Yvonne Sedberry, a beloved daughter, friend, educator, military trailblazer, and faithful servant of Christ, passed away on September 23, 2026, at the age of 71.

Gail was born on August 17, 1955, in Frankfurt, Germany, to Edward and Jo Ann Sedberry. She was preceded in death by her beloved parents and three brothers.

Gail graduated from Killeen High School in 1973 and went on to attend Texas A&M University, where she distinguished herself as a student of geology. She was a trailblazer at Texas A&M, becoming the first Black woman to join, organize, and lead the university’s first Women’s Corps of Cadets class. Her courage, determination, and willingness to break barriers were evident throughout her life.

In 1977, Gail entered the United States Navy as a Seaman. She was stationed in San Diego and assigned to a Special Boat Unit, becoming the first woman, regardless of race, assigned to that particular naval command. In 1986, she entered the United States Army, where she served until 1989. Her military service reflected the strength, courage, and perseverance that defined her character.

In the early 1990s, Gail made Polk County, Florida, her home. She continued her education at the University of South Florida in Tampa, earning a graduate degree in School Psychology. In 1995, she joined the Polk County School District as a school psychologist, beginning a career that would span more than 25 years.

Gail devoted her professional life to children. Through her work as a school psychologist, she touched countless lives by supporting students, advocating for their needs, and believing in their ability to succeed. Her impact extended far beyond her professional responsibilities; she cared deeply about the children and families she served.

Outside of her professional life, Gail had a deep love for learning and the simple joys of life. She was an avid reader who enjoyed the opportunity to discover new ideas and stories through books. She also had a genuine love for all kinds of music, finding joy and comfort in music across many genres.

Gail was a faithful and active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. Her faith in Jesus Christ was at the center of her life. To know Gail was to know a woman who loved Christ wholeheartedly. She lived her faith through kindness, generosity, compassion, and service to others.

Gail will be remembered as a courageous pioneer, a compassionate educator, a devoted servant, an avid reader, a lover of music, and a true friend. She faced life with strength and determination and remained a soldier at heart until her final breath.

She leaves behind her beloved church family, her many friends and colleagues, and especially her dear friend, Maria, whose friendship and love were a cherished part of Gail’s life.

Gail’s life was one of service, courage, faith, and love. Her legacy lives on in the students she helped, the barriers she broke, the people she encouraged, the music she enjoyed, the books she treasured, and the many lives she touched.

She fought the good fight, she finished the race, she kept the faith.2 Timothy 4:7

Above all, Gail's Christian hope rested not in what she accomplished, but in her Savior, Jesus Christ, who died for sinners and rose again.

Because Christ lives, death does not have the final word. Those who die in the Lord await the glorious resurrection of the body and the eternal life He has promised.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Immanuel Lutheran Church of Winter Haven, Florida in honor of Gail. Thank you.
