Thanh "Thomas" Chung

Thanh “Thomas” Chung, (56), Tempe, AZ, died on 1/23/2026. Thomas was born on 3/18/1969 in Saigon, Vietnam as the 6th child of Tuan and Kim (Wu) Chung. He immigrated with his family to the United States in 1979, lived in Indiana for about 4 years, and then relocated to Arizona. Thomas graduated from Corona Del Sol High School, Tempe, AZ in 1988 and earned a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering from Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ in 1994. Thomas was preceded in death by his parents and sister Yvonne Chung. He is survived by four siblings, Vincent (Ann) Chung, Judy (Bobby) Cheng, Luan (Yan) Chung, and Chi (Patrick) Chung-Thornton; nieces Tiffany (Brendan) Munzer, Amy (Matt) Nukaya-Heady, Amanda Chung, Kaitlyn Chung, Brianna Chung; nephews Kevin (Sara) Cheng and Brian Chung. Thomas was passionate about computers and programming. He excelled throughout a 28-year career in information technology systems, developing software expertise withUNIX, GNU, Veritas, BEA Weblogic Server, Apache, Tomcat, and Microsoft Office, andnetwork expertise with TCP/IP protocol, DSN, HTTP, NIS, SMTP, and NFS. Thomas’sfirst full-time job was performing as a Data Technician with Campus MCI in Phoenix,where he was quickly promoted to Systems Administrator. Hired by DHL in Tempe, hethrived as a Senior Systems Support Engineer and later was promoted to PrincipalSystems Support Engineer. After leaving DHL, Thomas consulted with CollectiveTechnologies, often travelling to clients’ sites in Austin to set up systems and provideanalysis, planning, training, knowledge transfer, and customer mentoring. He was soonhired as a Systems Support Analyst V at Wells Fargo in Tempe where he performed asa lead UNIX administrator and special subject matter expert for Veritas products.Thomas’s dedication to his craft led to yet another promotion to Senior SystemsOperations Engineer, the role from which he retired after 17 years at Wells Fargo.Thomas enjoyed himself in his free time working on and building computers, reading, and collecting books, in particular science, science fiction, mystery, fantasy, and comic books. He often found himself outdoors biking, hiking, and taking road trips to new cities while always finding the local Panera for his cup of coffee or soda. A dedicated and generous Uncle, Thomas took his nephews and nieces on several road trips to California to visit their Aunt Chi and to visit Yosemite and other state parks. They together enjoyed sightseeing within the Bay Area and eating at new restaurants. In retirement, Thomas was particularly passionate about hiking, spending many hours on the trails around Phoenix. He was committed to Friday dinners with family in Chandler, and continued his road trips to visit family across the country. Still fascinated by computers and intrigued by evolving technology, Thomas attended AI conferences and spent countless late night hours researching, learning, and implementing the many uses of AI
