Douglas "Ed" Edward Miller
Aug 8, 1952 — Jul 2, 2026
Douglas Edward "Ed" Miller passed away July 2, 2026 in Seal Rock, Oregon, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was born August 8, 1952 in Barberton, Ohio to Helene Lucille Summerville and David Albert Miller. He joined an older brother David Scott.
Growing up Ed loved baseball and music. He played baseball until his shoulder and knees wouldn't let him. His love for music blossomed into something he enjoyed the rest of his life and shared with others.
Ed graduated from Barberton High School, got his MBA at Case Western Reserve in Cleveland and went on to work for Ernst & Ernst, later renamed to Ernst and Whinney. He joined Hewlett-Packard in Palo Alto, California in 1981. Travel was a big part of his life while working in the audit department for HP. On a trip to Boise, he met the love of his life, Willma, who he later married in May of 1988. Ed took an early retirement package from HP in 2002 but continued to work there as a contractor until 2007. He became the primary caregiver for his parents in 2007, moving them from Florida to Idaho. His love, devotion and care for them was a gift to them and example to all.
He loved the trumpet. He was a founding and active member of the HP Big Band, Boise Straight Ahead until moving to the Oregon Coast in 2017. At the coast, he played in several groups, ultimately landing a chair with the Lincoln Pops Big Band. Covid hit about the time Ed was diagnosed so his band days came to an end. He enjoyed playing at home and experimenting with various trumpets and mouthpieces. He was drawn to big band music in particular. His CD collection is enormous
Ed and Willma spent five years in California and 20+ years in Eagle, Idaho. They retired to Seal Rock, Oregon to live out their dream of being near the ocean. Unfortunately cancer dramatically changed their dreams.Ed is survived by his wife, Willma Staples, Abby, their golden retriever, and brother Scott (Laura) Miller. He was preceded in death by his parents, David and Lucille Miller. Burial will be at the Hilltop Cemetery, Nyssa, Oregon.
