Roselyn Lucille Marin

Roselyn Compton (nee Young) was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on July 11, 1926 and lived with her mother Martha Jackson - Compton and father Gerome Compton, who adopted her and sister Sue. She lived in Wanamaker (New Bethel) for thirty-five years. During that time, she was employed at Fort Harrison for thirteen years in both the U.S. Army Research and Development office as well as the Adjutant General’s office. She began playing piano at the Officer’s Club a few days a week and along the way met Gerald Sebastian (Jerry) Marin. They were married in the Base Chapel in 1960 and their union produced a combined family of Roz’s two sons plus Jerry’s two sons in North Carolina. A new son arrived before Jerry was reassigned to the Panama Canal Zone. They were again reassigned to Ft. Bliss, El Paso, Texas in 1964 but returned to Ft. Harrison in 1967. After Jerry’s retirement from the Army in 1968 the family moved to Tampa and resided in Carrollwood, Carrollwood Village and in Westchase respectively, over several years. After Jerry’s death in 2012, she chose to go on with life at University Village Residences as her new home where she enjoyed her old friends from USF. Hobbies included playing bridge, painting, and using her considerable writing skills and good humor to create bios on residents for the Village News. In her later years she moved to Angels Senior Living in Land O Lakes, Florida where family members visited.

Roz held a Bachelor’s degree in English, earned a Master’s Degree in Guidance Counseling and graduated Cum Laud at USF in 1976. She began her counseling career as an elementary school counselor at Lacoochee Elementary School in Pasco County, continuing on to Citrus Park and Essrig Elementary schools. She later became a Mental Health Counselor until her retirement in 1988. She was a member of the Village Presbyterian Church in Carrollwood and a former member of the Tampa Lakes Women’s Club. 

Roz loved gardening and grew beautiful roses, orchids and cacti. She and Jerry spent many summers in the N. Carolina mountains around Boone and Blowing Rock. They loved to travel afar and enjoyed cruising the world with friends. Other hobbies included writing, photography, and art in all forms including her own paintings. She was a skilled pianist and organist, a faithful fan of The Florida Orchestra for fifty years. But her favorite past times were dancing with Jerry, playing bridge with good friends and enjoying family gatherings which she treasured the most.

Roz was preceded in death by her parents, Martha and Gerome Compton; first husband, Donald Pollock; husband Lt. Col. Gerald S. Marin; sister, Janice Sue Leavell; and grandson, Kevin Lee Evangelist. 

Roz is survived by her sons and families in Florida: son, Daniel Marin; son, Charles Pollock (Rose Marie); grandson, Ross Michael Pollock; son, John Pollock (Linda); daughter, Susan Evangelist Navaro (Damon); granddaughter, Linda Bonello; great granddaughters, Ariana Pena and Bailey Rose; granddaughter, Sarah Marie Dockins (Andrew); great granddaughter, Lylah Marie Lindsay; grandson, John Ray Dockins; stepson, Gerald A. Marin (Kay dec) NC; son, Geoffrey A. Marin (Kim); grandson, Jackson; granddaughter, Kate; daughter, Jennifer K. Marin; stepson, John S. Marin (Rosemarie) FL; son, Randall Marin (Melissa) NC; grands, Luke and Parker; son Gregory Marin (Ashley) NC; granddaughter, Erika; daughter, Alexandra Marin of Bath, MI; grands, Arabella, Josiah, Ryland, and Sadie.
