Thomas Lewis Masser

CDR Thomas Lewis Masser, Supply Corps, USN, retired, of Santa Barbara, California and Rockville, Maryland, passed away on June 16, 2026, in Santa Barbara after a courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease.

Born in Flushing, Queens, New York, Thomas was the son of the late Mary and Lewis Masser. He was the middle of three sons, with brothers James Masser and George Masser, both of whom are deceased. He graduated from Queens College before joining the United States Navy and later earned his MBA from National University.

Thomas served his country with distinction during a 22-year career in the United States Navy, retiring as a Commander and Supply Corps Officer.

A listing of his career assignments, however, cannot fully reflect the true character of Tom Masser. He was meticulous in the execution of the demanding supply management responsibilities of naval ships and bases. He was loyal and protective of his shipmates and the commands he served. He would not accept second best from himself, and he ensured that those he led were well trained and treated with respect, humor, and compassion.

Following his Navy career, Thomas continued his professional journey with Edward Jones, where he helped others plan and manage their financial portfolios.

Thomas was the beloved husband of 41 years to the late CDR Andrea Janis Masser, Nurse Corps, USN, retired. He was a devoted father to his daughter, Lauren Masser Contreras, and son, James Ryan Masser; a loving father-in-law to Mario Contreras; and a proud grandfather to Cora and Olivia.

He cared deeply about politics and current events, yet his sense of humor transcended political parties. He was devoted to his family and to his dog, Max, and will be remembered for his loyalty, wit, service, and love for those closest to him.

In the final years of his life, Thomas moved to Santa Barbara to live with his daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughters. He passed away at the side of his son, James.

Thomas will return to Maryland, where a service will be held at Oakdale Emory United Methodist Church. He will be laid to rest with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery. The family will share service and burial dates with friends and family once arrangements have been finalized.
