Catherine Jennie Umstetter
Aug 3, 1934 — Oct 8, 2026
Catherine Jennie Umstetter (nee DeMarco), of Sewell, NJ passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 8, 2026. She was 92 years old.
Everyone who knew Catherine will remember her as an extraordinary wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a beautiful woman, whose caring heart, generous spirit, and thoughtful nature touched the lives of those around her. Catherine took great pride in herself, her family, and the home she so lovingly cared for. She had a special eye for detail and believed that everything had its place, especially her yard!
Catherine was married to her beloved late husband, John William Umstetter, Sr. until his passing in 1994 .They met in Philadelphia, where Catherine was born, and began building a life and family together. In 1968, they moved to Sewell, New Jersey, where they continued raising their family and creating a home filled with love and cherished memories. Their life together was the foundation of the family, Catherine held so dear, and the love they shared remained an enduring part of her story. Catherine and John also shared a passion for gardening and would grow many vegetables, they would even make their own tomato sauce and pickles.
Up to her passing neighbors could often find Catherine outside, faithfully tending to her yard and picking up the branches and twigs that fell from the trees above. In Catherine’s world, branches simply did not belong in a well-kept yard! Her dedication never wavered, and her backyard was just as lovingly maintained, filled with beautiful flowers that she took great pleasure in planting each season. Her brother Joe would watch her faithfully watering the flowers every morning. These simple routines reflected so much of who Catherine was: hardworking, independent, meticulous, and someone who found joy in caring for the things and people she loved.
Catherine also cherished the time she spent bowling with her beloved husband, John. What began as an activity they enjoyed together grew into a lifelong passion for Catherine after John’s passing 32 years ago, she continued bowling into her 90’s. With her bowling ball bag and shoes in hand, she would head off to the lanes doing something she loved with her league, surrounded by friends and good company. Bowling became more than just a pastime; it was a special part of her life that brought her friendship, enjoyment, and countless memories.
Playing cards with her brother Joe and his companion Josephine was always a lot of laughs. Cheating was almost a “House rule” and everyone always left as a winner. She was a crafty one with hardworking drive that would surpass almost anyone like the energizer bunny. She worked at Walmart over ten years and took pride in folding and fixing the men’s clothing department. She enjoyed crocheting Afghan blankets for all of her family to stay warm.
She found great comfort with her four-legged friends. Jessie was her best companion and truly shared a special bond with Catherine. She lost Jessie five years ago, and missed her every single day thereafter. There were many nights she would hear Jessie barking and walking through the house. Jessie and Catherine surely are back together now in heaven.
Loving mother of the late John Umstetter (Ann), Linda Beatty (Dave), the late Catherine Wells (Steve), and Joseph Umstetter (Anne). Cherished grandmother of Chelsea Dawson (James), David Beatty (Victoria), Diana Beatty, Matthew Wells, Julie Polinder (Geoffery) and Laura Nutt (Will). Greatgrandmother of Bryson, Callie, David, Brock, Bradley, Stephen, Johanna, Colin and Abigail.
