Norma Weeks Medlon

Norma Weeks Medlon (nee Skidmore), passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 19, 2026. She was 101 years old.

Norma was born in Newark, NJ and spent most of her life youth in East Orange, NJ, and her adult life in Pompton Lakes, NJ.

She married her husband, George, in 1945, and together they shared 57 years of marriage before his passing in 2002.

Norma was one of the first female bookkeepers in a large retail business at a time when few women held such positions. She opened the door and set a platform for others to follow in her footsteps. Always dressed the part and sharp as a pin, Norma earned the respect of owners and colleagues throughout her career, and many looked to her for advice.

Norma was fiercely independent, capable and determined throughout her life. If something needed doing, she generally believed she could do it herself—and she usually could. She continued mowing her own lawn until she was 92 and, remarkably, was still doing her daily squats at 101.

She was also incredibly talented with her hands. Norma crocheted hundreds of blankets over the years and was an accomplished seamstress. She made her daughter Karen's clothes throughout high school—including the wardrobe that helped earn Karen the distinction of “Best Dressed”—and later made Karen's wedding dress.

Norma enjoyed traveling, with a trip to London becoming a particular favorite. She enjoyed coffee, a glass of wine, Kahlúa and cream, fish and chips, and watching White Christmas during the holiday season.

Some of the family's fondest memories were found in simple traditions: weekend trips to Toys “R” Us with her grandchildren, followed by ice cream at the Old Barn Milk Barn, and countless birthdays and holidays centered around family and, inevitably, dessert. Shadow Cake from Wyckoff Bakery was a particular favorite, along with Mississippi Mud, cheesecake, lemon meringue pie and butter cookies. In this family, dessert was never an afterthought—it was practically a family value.

Loving wife of the late George Medlon; beloved mother of the late Karen A. Sullivan; devoted grandmother of Shannon Sullivan and Sean Sullivan and his wife, Jaime; and cherished great-grandmother, affectionately known as “Gigi,” to Lily, Kaleigh and Khloe.

Family and friends are invited to attend Norma's viewing on Sunday, October 4, 2026 from 11 AM to 1 PM at McGuinness Funeral Home, 573 Egg Harbor Road, Sewell, NJ 08080. A celebration of life will begin at 1 PM. Norma will be laid to rest privately with her late husband at Mt. Rest Cemetery in Butler, NJ.
