George J. Shaffer, Sr.

Jun 27, 1947 — May 16, 2026

George J. Shaffer Sr., age 78, of New Jersey and formerly of Sevierville, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 16, 2026, after a courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease, with his beloved wife Sharon by his side.

Born in Paulsboro, New Jersey on June 27, 1947, George was the son of George and Bernice Shaffer and one of eight siblings. A proud member of the Paulsboro High School Class of 1965, he remained a lifelong supporter of Paulsboro football and rarely missed an opportunity to cheer on his alma mater.

Following graduation, George honorably served his country in the United States Army from 1965 to 1968. After completing his military service, he attended North Texas University before returning home to New Jersey, where he earned an Associate Degree in Accounting from Gloucester County College in 1971.

George married Margaret Smierciak and became the proud father of George Jr. in 1975 and Timothy in 1979. On July 19, 1986, he married the love of his life, Sharon deBeaumont, and together they blended and raised a loving family that included sons Michael and Ryan alongside George and Timothy.

George worked for E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Cowan Transportation as a commercial truck driver. Beyond his career, he devoted countless hours to serving his community as an EMT and firefighter with the Woolwich Volunteer Fire Company Station 25-1 and Colonial Manor Volunteer Fire Company Station 6-3. He also faithfully served in the New Jersey National Guard, retiring in 1993 with the rank of Sergeant.

A devoted man of faith, George was a longtime member of Kemble Memorial United Methodist Church in Woodbury. Upon retirement, he and Sharon fulfilled their lifelong dream of relocating to Sevierville, Tennessee, where they enjoyed life at the foot of the Smoky Mountains. Due to declining health, they later returned to New Jersey to be closer to family and medical care.

George will be remembered for his strength, loyalty, service to others, and unwavering love for his family.

He is survived by his loving wife, Sharon Shaffer; sons George Shaffer Jr. and his wife Natalie, Timothy Shaffer, Michael deBeaumont and his wife Nicole, and Ryan Moys and his wife Christina; ten cherished grandchildren, Alexis, Joey, Liliana, Joshua, Abigail, Billy, Desmond, Tyler, Jasper, and Maddox; one great-grandchild, Milo; his brother David Shaffer and wife Alicia; sisters Madalyn Reale, Shirley Klein, and Vallie Piccirelli and her husband Vince; along with many extended family members and friends.

He was predeceased by his parents, George and Bernice Shaffer, and his brothers Kent, Carl, and Earl.

George’s life was defined by service, faith, family, and quiet strength. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Family and friends are invited to attend George's viewing on Friday, May 22, 2026 from 9 AM to 11 AM at the McGuinness Funeral Home, 34 Hunter Street, Woodbury, NJ 08096. Funeral service will begin at 11 AM. Interment will follow at Eglington Cemetery, Clarksboro, NJ.
