Herbert Yuzuru Yoneoka
Sep 25, 1944 — Oct 13, 2026
Herbert Y. Yoneoka, 82, formerly of Hawaii and California, passed away in his home in National Park, NJ on October 13, 2026
Herbie lived a life filled with dedication, friendship, laughter, and a love for bringing people together. His journey took him from Hawaii to California and eventually to New Jersey, leaving lasting memories and friendships along the way.
Herbie graduated from Hilo High School in 1962 and enlisted in the United States Army, where he served as a paratrooper from 1962 to 1965. Following his military service, he attended Hawaii Technical Trade School and later worked at Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands. He eventually settled in California, where he dedicated more than 30 years of service to the United States Postal Service as a mail clerk.
While Herbie accomplished much throughout his life, it was the joy he brought to others that truly defined him. He had a gift for making people laugh and smile, and his presence could light up a room. His humor, personality, and ability to make everyone feel welcome made him someone people naturally gravitated toward. For Herbie, cooking was more than preparing a meal; it was a way to bring people together. He cherished dinner gatherings with friends and family, sharing good food, great conversation, and the kind of moments that become treasured memories. Those who gathered around his table knew that the best part of a meal was often the people sharing it with him.
And then there were billiards…
To say Herbie loved pool would never do it justice. Billiards was more than a pastime for him; it was a passion and a talent that so many people in his life came to know and admire. He was truly one of the best around, a remarkable player whose skill spoke for itself. But it was never just about the game. It was about the competition, the camaraderie, the laughter, and the people who gathered around the table. A game of pool was simply never as much fun without Herbie there.
Herbie leaves behind his dear friend and caregiver, Donna Maria Alexander, the daughter of his heart and his longtime partner at the pool table. As well as his dear friend Sam Johnson who he called brother and took care of Herbie alongside Donna. Donna and Sam were by his side when he passed peacefully at home.
Surviving Herbie are his siblings, Richard Yoneoka (Cary), Raymond “Tadashi” Yoneoka (Elvira), Harris Yoneoka (Diane) and Margie Iboshi (Francis); his Godson, David Honma and his children Lauren, Ethan and Henry.
Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing on Sunday, October 18, 2026 at the McGuinness Funeral Home, 34 Hunter St., Woodbury, NJ 08096 from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm. As a conclusion of our time together remembering Herbie, Military Honors will be presented at 1:00pm at the funeral home.
