Rey C Contreras
May 7, 1952 — Oct 8, 2026
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Reynaldo (Rey) Contreras. He passed away peacefully on October 8, 2026, in Mesa, Arizona at the age of 74. He was born at home May 1952 in Sonora, Arizona a close-knit mining community with rich cultural traditions and strong bonds.
Rey Contreras is survived by his wife of 44 years Susan Contreras, his devoted daughter, Veronica (Salvador) Lopez, devoted son, Jose (Miriam) Contreras. His grandchildren are Olivia, Maria, Eva, Mia and Leo. He is also survived by his brothers, George (Margie) Contreras, Ronnie (Mabel) Contreras, Art (Gloria) Contreras. He was loved and adored by numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and friends. Though he will be deeply missed, we find comfort in knowing that he is free from disease and any pain.
Rey was preceded in death by his father Salvador Contreras, mother Carmen Contreras, brothers, Salvadorcito Contreras, Eddie Contreras, his sisters, Isabel Roman, Eva Rivera, Lupe Lira and Bertha Candalaria.
Rey lived his life “Con Ganas’ (enthusiastically). Our world is duller without his presence. He was fiercely loyal to his family, brothers, and relatives. He shared his humor and quick wit with his life-long friends. His diverse taste in music was reflected in playing guitar and singing Beatle songs, Mexican canciones, jazz, Estevan Jordan, ‘60s music, Motown, rock and roll and rhythm and blues. Even though Parkinson’s was affecting his mind and body, music persevered within his mind and Rey still had the ability to sing or tap his hands or fingers to a beat.
Rey was bright, and an astute student of history. However, he had three loves ASU football, exercising and his art. Rey bled maroon and gold. He was a season ticket holder and spent decades tailgating with family and friends at La Casita near Sun Devil Stadium. Exercise was a religion to Rey. He worked out every day and even ran 3 half marathons in his 50s.
Rey’s drawing skills were extraordinary. His Fine Arts degree from ASU refined his art, and his art adorns the walls of many family members and friends. He designed T-shirts, polos and sweatshirts, posters and even illustrated a book.
God blessed him with talent, and he shared that talent with everyone who knew him.
