Dr. Lawrence E. Permen, MD, beloved husband, father, physician, and man of deep faith, passed away peacefully on May 10, 2026 at the age of 89.
Born in Detroit, Michigan on June 13, 1936. "Larry" (as he was known as), dedicated his life to the care of others. He graduated from Wayne State University College of Medicine in 1961 before completing his residency at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan, On September 03, 1960, he married the love of his life, Rosemary Bardzel. Larry and Rosemary then relocated to California, where they raised nine children. It was there that he started a private practice in Oxnard, California, serving patients for over 40 years until his retirement.
A faithful Roman Catholic, Larry was a longtime parishioner of St. Thomas Becket Catholic Church. A devoted member of the Church, he attended daily Mass and was known for his kindness, prayer, and generosity toward others. His faith guided both his vocation and the way he cared for family, friends, colleagues, and patients alike.
Outside of his faith and medicine, he found great joy in tending his fruit and vegetable garden, especially his cherished fruit trees. He nurtured them with patience, and lovingly shared the fruits of his labor with others.
He loved playing the piano and listening to classical music, which often filled his home with the sounds of Mozart, Beethoven, and Rachmaninoff. He had a great fondness for good wine, an interest in traveling, and a strong curiosity for worldly events.
"What do you mean, what do I mean?", "Don't get old" and “Save your money and buy a farm” were common phrases that he loved to say to all of his children.
He is survived by his children: Larry (Pamela), Heidi (Brad), Michael, Jennifer (Gary), Mary (John), Patricia (Milton), Theresa (Robert), Elizabeth (Jeremy), and Joseph. He had 19 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren with 2 more on the way; Sister: Carol (Jerry); Brother: John (Joyce). Larry was preceded in death by his devoted wife, Rosemary and his parents, Edward and Phyllis Permen.
