Starly Hodges

Starly Hodges had an incredible life that ended on March 2, 2026- the same day as her late husband, Cecil Hodges, died five years prior.  A memorial for Starly will be held on April 23, 2026 at Wesley United Methodist Church at 1:00  

Born October 30, 1930, in Portland, she was raised in Estacada by her parents, Molly and Charles Sparks.  Starly attended the University of Oregon, earning her BS degree and her teaching certification. During her time as a Duck, she was a member of the Alpha Phi Sorority and the cheerleading team.  It was at Oregon where she met, and later married Abe Johnson, with whom she raised four sons: Todd, Tracey, Terry and Tim.  

Starly was a dedicated educator, teaching typing and journalism and serving as a yearbook advisor at Wilson Jr. High, Kennedy Jr. High, and Churchill High School until her retirement in 1978.  Beyond her professional life, she was a talented multitasker devoted to her children's many activities.  

Her retirement was filled with passion and community involvement.  She was a lifelong fan of the Oregon Ducks sports, an avid tennis player at Eugene Swim and Tennis Club, and a traveler who explored the world with her family.  Her faith was central to her life; She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church for 60+ years and sang in the choir for four decades.  Starly was also a committed philanthropist, supporting 38 charities that impacted many people over the years, leaving a lasting legacy of generosity.  

Starly is survived by her four sons, two daughters-in-law, five grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.  She will be remembered for the love she spread to everyone she met. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you make a donation to Wesley United Methodist Church in Eugene, OR.
