Douglas A. Abel

Douglas A. Abel, 76 , of Colorado passed away on August 10, 2026, at his son Monty's home in Greeley, Colorado, after a four year battle with Lewy body dementia. Doug was born on August 10, 1950 in Creston, Iowa, to Kenneth and Darlene (Cramer) Abel.

Doug graduated from Creston High School with the Class of 1969. During his high school years, he developed a love of wrestling and introduced the sport to his family. He qualified for the State Wrestling Tournament all four years of high school0 a remarkable accomplishment that reflected the determination and fighting spirit he carried throughout his life. That same strength helped him face the challenges of Lewy body dementia over the past four years.

Following high school, Doug began his career as a meat cutter and farmer. In 1969, he married Vickie Byers Justice, and together they had three children: Misty Abel, Monty Abel and his wife Jenny, and Melissa Abel, Although Doug and Vickie later divorced, Vickie remained a close and valued part of the Abel family. 

Doug eventually moved to Colorado, where he developed a successful career in real estate. He purchased and managed numerous rental properties and also enjoyed buying, renovating and selling homes. His ability to see potential in a property and his willingness to work hard made this an important part of his life. 

As Doug's health began to decline, he moved in with his son Monty, who lovingly cared for him and helped him manage the difficult journey of this terrible disease. Doug was surrounded by family and love during his final years. 

Doug is survived by his three children Misty Abel, Monty Abel and wife Jenny and Melissa Abel; five grandchildren; his brothers, Denny, Jeff and Chuck Abel; and his sisters, Diane Schieffer, Debbie Rutledge and Dawana Abel. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, cousins, extended family members and dear friends. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Darlene Abel; his paternal and maternal grandparents; his brother, Mike Abel; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. 

Doug grew up surrounded by a large, loving family and many friends. He will be remembered as a good father, brother, and a friend, as well as a determined man who faced life's challenges with strength and perseverance. His memory will live on through his children, grandchildren, siblings, extended family, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him. 

A celebration of life will be held at a later date Creston, Iowa. The date and time will be announced at a later time.
