It is with profound sadness and an enduring sense of gratitude for a life well lived that we announce the passing of Matthew David Martinez, who left this world peacefully on May 12, 2026, at the age of 71. He was surrounded by the love and comfort of his wife in his home after a courageous battle with a long illness.
Born on August 21, 1954, in the town of Laramie, Wyoming, Matthew was the beloved son of Jovita and the late Filiberto Martinez, and his stepfather, Steve Merrill. From a young age, Matthew exhibited a tenacity and spirit that would guide him throughout his life. He was a proud graduate of Greeley West High School's Class of 1973, where he made history by becoming a state champion in wrestling, proudly securing the first trophy for the newly built school. His dedication and spirit were evident in every challenge he faced, both on and off the mat, as he earned the nickname “Bobcat”.
Matthew's career at Kodak Colorado spanned an impressive 37 years. He began his journey with the company shortly after high school and worked diligently across various departments. His colleagues remember him for his hard work , expertise and willingness to share knowledge.
In 1983, Matthew married the his wife Deb, with whom he shared 43 wonderful years filled with laughter, adventure, and a shared love for the outdoors. together. In February of 1985, they welcomed the birth of their son, Matthew Jr. in the early years, the family visited as many national parks as they could around the Western United States. After Deb and Matthew's retirement in 2012, there were many kayaking trips, creating cherished memories that will forever be etched in the hearts of those who knew them.
Matthew's love for animals, led him to have many loyal canine companions throughout his life. He will be dearly missed by Honey Boo Boo, his latest rescue dog, who brought immense joy to his days.
In addition to Jovita and Steve, Matthew is survived by his devoted wife Deb, their loving son Matthew Jr., and his siblings: brothers Bert and Vincent, and sisters Patricia and Coleen, and many spouses, nieces and nephews.
A service to honor Matthew's life will be held at Linn Grove Cemetery, located at 1700 Cedar St. On May 28th at 10am in Greeley. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Banner Hospice in Greeley, an organization close to Matthew's heart.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the hospice nurses whose care and compassion were a blessing during Matthew's final year. Deb, in particular, wishes to express her deep appreciation for the grace and kindness shown to both her and Matthew.
Matthew Martinez’s memory will forever be a source of comfort to those who were fortunate enough to know him. Rest peacefully, dear Matthew. You will always be in our hearts.
