Vera Marie Schum

Vera Schum, age 92, entered heaven on June 8th, 2026, surrounded by the love of her two daughters.

Born on October 6, 1933, in Chicago, Illinois, to Olga and Frederich Stotz, Vera grew up with her brother, Fritz, and was affectionately known as “Schatzie” German for sweetheart.

After graduating from Northwestern Memorial School of Nursing, Vera moved to Greeley, Colorado in 1955 with her dear friends, Neva Adams and Jean Nichols, to begin her nursing career. There she met her husband, George, on a blind date. They married in 1956 and shared 60 years of marriage, raising their daughters, Janet and Bobbi.

A dedicated lifelong learner, Vera became one of the first three nurse practitioners in Colorado while balancing work and family. Her nursing career spanned pediatrics, inpatient care, public health, and women’s health. She especially cherished her 20 years at the University of Northern Colorado Health Center.

Vera enjoyed hiking, photography, painting, volunteering, and caring for others. Her Christian faith guided her life and inspired her commitment to service.

Vera is survived by her daughters, Janet (Alan) and Bobbi (Kim); grandchildren Kelly (Danny) Lewis, Matthew (Sierra) Okerman, Sarah Wilson (Marc Havenga), and Nicholas Wilson; great-granddaughters Aubrey, Eliyanah, Renae, and Irene; her brother, Fritz Stotz; and many extended family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, George, and granddaughter, Emily Wilson.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Someren Glen Assisted Living and Brighton Hospice for their compassionate care.
