Emblem

Dr. David N. Burry, a dedicated optometrist with a distinguished career spanning over five decades, passed away on May 5, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. David was born on October 3, 1942, in Fort Pierce, Florida, to Ivan and Mabel Burry and was a proud fifth-generation Floridian. David graduated from local Dan McCarty High School; his prom date was his future wife of 62 years, Mary Sue. Following graduation, David attended the University of Florida and thereafter obtained an Optometry Doctorate from the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis. His professional journey began with two years of service as an optometrist in the United States Army at Fort Benning. Following his military service, he established his own optometry practice in Haines City, Florida, where he would provide optometric services to the community for five decades. Later, he contributed his expertise at Eye Specialists of Mid-Florida, P.A., where he continued to serve patients with the same skill and compassion that defined his career. David was an avid and dedicated sportsman. Decades of playing tennis, fishing, and sailing, with his friends and family led to stories that are his friends’ favorite and his sons’ most cherished memories. David made his friends and family laugh every single day. Experiencing David Burry was a gift and he will be missed by anyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. David is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Mary Sue Burry; their three sons, Brian Burry and his wife Nubia of Windemere, Florida, Matthew Burry of Lake Mary, Florida, and Jeffrey Burry and his wife Kara of Winter Haven, Florida. He also leaves behind cherished grandchildren: David, Nick, Reese, Ben, and Birdie Burry, who carry forward his legacy. Additionally, he is survived by his brother, Roger Burry of Woodland Hills, California. A gathering of family and friends will be on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, from 10 am until the funeral at 11 am at Oak Ridge Funeral Care, Haines City. A reception will follow at Southern Dunes Golf and Country Club.
