Hector Angel Cruz
Jul 8, 1957 ā Aug 19, 2026
Chaplain Hector Angel Cruz, born in Brooklyn, New York, grew up in the Emmanuel Church on 55th Street, where his mother, Martha QuiƱones, nurtured a foundation of faith. After high school, Chaplain Cruz served in the U.S. Army in Korea before beginning a long career in law enforcement, working in corrections and as a police officer. After relocating the family to Florida, Chaplain Cruz continued serving in corrections at the Department of Juvenile Justice. Chaplain Cruz also opened and led a church for several years including a podcast (New Joy Ministry) and later served at Champions Church. A calling to community service led Chaplain Cruz to join the Polk County Fire Department as a Chaplain July 2022. For about a year, Chaplain Cruz also dedicated himself to supporting first responders at Winter Haven Hospital, faithfully sitting at the ambulatory entrance to provide snacks, drinks, encouragement, and a compassionate smile to those arriving with patientsāsmall acts of care that reflected his deep understanding of their daily sacrifices.
Chaplain Cruz dearly loved his family and cherished every opportunity to spend time with family and friends. He had a gift for making others feel special, welcomed, and valued. Chaplain Cruz found joy in music, whether singing, playing bass, or performing percussion. A dedicated martial arts enthusiast, Chaplain Cruz held a deep passion for Aikido. One of Chaplain Cruzās favorite ways to unwind was spending time in the pool, relaxing to smooth jazz or lively Latin salsa.
Chaplain Cruz is survived by spouse, Nidia Cruz; children, Damian, Michelle, and Leslie; and sons and daughterāinālaw, Kimberly, Steven, and Said. Chaplain Cruz leaves behind grandchildren, Jasmine, Keagan, Zachary, Isabella, Adaline, and Violet. Additional family members include sister, Lillian; brotherāinālaw, David; niece, Christine, and nephew Jeremy.
