Thomas F. Roward

Thomas F. Roward, age 94, passed away on April 14th, 2026, in Tucson, Arizona.

He was born on June 22nd, 1931, in Erie, Pennsylvania, the first of four children born to Thomas and Cecilia Roward. Tom spent his childhood in Erie before attending Duquesne University, where he earned his degree in pharmacy. After graduation, he proudly served two years of active duty in the United States Army.

Following his military service, Tom began his career with Lederle Laboratories as a pharmaceutical salesman in Cleveland, Ohio. It was there that his life changed forever when he met Geraldine "Gerry" Martinko, a nurse in a doctor's office he visited for work. Gerry made the first move, asking Tom out - a story that the kids loved to hear - and before long, they were married and began a life together that would last over 60 years.

Tom and Gerry raised five children - Mary, Dave, Tim, Julie, and James. Tom was a dedicated provider who spent long hours working at the drugstore, while Gerry took the lead in raising their family. He could be a tough and disciplined father, but his commitment to his family was steady and unwavering. Above all, Tom and Gerry were inseparable, sharing a deep and enduring partnership that defined their lives.

Through his work, Tom met Jim Ohliger, the owner of a retail drugstore, who invited him to become a partner in opening a second location. Together, they successfully operated Ohliger Drug in North Olmsted, Ohio, for more than 20 years.

As their children built lives of their own, Tom and Gerry moved to Wake Forest, North Carolina, to be closer to their youngest son, James, his wife, Patricia, and their children, Hannah and Jack. They especially treasured this time, enjoying close family moments and visits with Gerry's sister, Janice, and her husband, Ruben, who lived nearby. These years brought them great happiness and connection.

In retirement, Tom and Gerry enjoyed traveling and visiting their growing family, including grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Their Catholic faith was a central part of Tom's life, particularly in his later years. He devoted much of his time to volunteering, first in Cleveland at the West Side Catholic Center, and later at Catholic Parish Outreach in Raleigh, North Carolina. He was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral in Raleigh, where he found community and spiritual grounding. His service to others was a meaningful expression of his faith and an important part of his retirement.

Gerry's sudden passing in February 2023 was a profound loss that deeply affected Tom. Later that year, in July 2023, he moved to Tucson, Arizona, where he was supported by his son, Tim, and daughter-in-law, Gretchen, enjoying holidays, birthdays, and Sunday dinners together. Tom made his home at The Forum, a senior living community, where he stayed active, formed friendships, and enjoyed daily meals with those around him.

Those who knew Tom will remember his strong sense of responsibility, his work ethic, and his lifelong devotion to Gerry. After his passing, he often spoke of being reunited with her.

That reunion came peacefully on April 14th, 2026, when Tom passed away at The Forum with Tim and Gretchen at his side.

He will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife, Gerry, at Pine Forest Memorial Gardens, Wake Forest, North Carolina, on May 8th 2026.
