John Henry Southern

Jul 7, 1947 — Jul 6, 2026

Mr. John Henry Southern passed away peacefully on July 6, 2026 at Novant Medical Center surrounded by family.

John was born July 7, 1947 at home in Northfork, West Virginia to James Garrett Southern and Mary Gilbert Southern. Before moving to North Carolina, he married the love of his life, Phyllis Karean "Kay" Southern on August 27, 1966. Kay passed away earlier this year on May 21. They shared a wonderful life together of nearly 60 years. Left to cherish the memories they made are two sons, Jon Marshall Southern (Rebecca) and Jason Matthew Southern (Amber). John lovingly became "Popi" when his only granddaughter, Adelynn Elise Southern was born. He adored her tremendously!

In addition to his wife, Kay, Mr. Southern was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Charles and Jim Southern; and one sister, Mary Ann Belcher; a special nephew, Alan Ray Belcher; and a grandson, Latham Garrett Southern.

He retired from Krispy Kreme after working there many years as a supervisor in the factory. Over the years, John enjoyed finding things that needed repair, and had a special knack for making them work again and run like new. He was a fixer of all things. His hobbies also included playing golf, with his two sons and friends and fishing.

One of John's greatest gifts was his love for, and steadfast faith in his Savior, Jesus Christ. He was not a man of many words, but had a calmness in his presence and reassurance of peace. For many years, he was a member of Kerwin Baptist Church.

His family would like to extend a heartfelt appreciation to his neighbors, the Lawsons and the Knights, and Lequita Smith.

The family will receive friends at Pierce-Jefferson Funeral Service, 213 W. Mountain St. Kernersville NC 27284 on Friday, July 10, 2026 from 10:00AM-10:45AM. Funeral services will follow beginning at 11:00AM with Pastor Daniel Hawtree officiating. Interment will be at 12:30PM at Gardens of Memory Walkertown, North Carolina.

In lieu of flowers, John's family request donations be made to Kerwin Baptist Church.
