Jerry John Coursey III

Apr 16, 1952 — Aug 3, 2026

Jerry John Coursey III, a kind and loving man, passed away peacefully at age 74 on August 3, 2026, after a long and brave struggle with Alzheimer’s. Born in Denver, he spent much of his childhood in Long Beach, California, and West Hartford,Connecticut, before settling in Washington, D.C., and Silver Spring, Maryland, for most of his adult life. He was a devoted husband of 31 years to Mary Griffin, and a cherished father of Connor (Chloe Delaney) and Ian. Preceded in death by his parents, Jerry(“Corky”) and Joanne Kelly Coursey, Jerry is survived by his brothers Michael, Daniel,Martin (Nancy), and Charles (Mary), along with several beloved nieces and nephews and cousins.

Jerry moved through the world with gentle grace, quiet wit, and an enduring faith. He found his greatest joys in life’s simpler pleasures: the rhythm of a baseball game, watching football, the comfort of a beautiful melody, and the quiet company of a good book.

Guided by a deep commitment to helping others, Jerry graduated from Northwest Catholic High School in West Hartford and earned his bachelor's degree from the College of the Holy Cross. He later completed a master’s degree in Organization Development from the NTL Institute for Applied Behavioral Science at American University. Early in his career, Jerry dedicated his time to nonprofits that supported seniors, the unhoused, and vulnerable communities. He then spent more than 30 years at the USDA, focusing on building stronger teams and improving workplace practices.

The family extends their deepest gratitude to his extraordinary caregivers at Necitas Assisted Living, his longtime and loyal teammates on the Mudhens softball team and to Papi, who was by his side for so many years.

A memorial service and burial will be held on August 28 at 10 a.m. at Reflection Park,16621 New Hampshire Ave, Silver Spring, followed by a reception at the Manor at Silo Falls, 19501 Georgia Avenue, Brookeville, MD.
