Robert Joseph Mitchell
Aug 27, 1939 — Dec 2, 2025
Robert Joseph Mitchell, affectionately known as Bob, was born on August 27, 1939, in Elkhorn, WI and passed away peacefully on December 2, 2025, at the ripe age of 86 in Sun City, AZ. Despite Parkinson's best attempts to dull his shine, Bob remained as sharp and witty as ever until the end.
Bob spent his formative years in East Troy, WI. When he attended Stone School (a one-room schoolhouse) learning the three R’s, he was also working on the family farm mastering the four M’s: milking, mayhem, making puns, and measuring corn height. He graduated from University of Wisconsin at Platteville with a degree in Agricultural Education. His lifelong career as a Jr. High math and science teacher at Harvard Jr. High in Harvard, IL continued the one-room tradition. He taught in the same classroom the whole time. Talk about commitment! His students knew him as a kind-hearted man, always ready with a quick quip and an abundance of patience.
Bob was a master of puns, often leaving friends and family groaning and laughing in equal measure. When he retired, his fellow teachers presented him with a t-shirt that said “2/3 of a pun = PU!”
With a quick wit and a kind heart, Bob never met a stranger—only friends he hadn't yet made. His presence was always welcome, whether he was listening intently or delighting family and friends by shaking things up during a game of Farkle, famously exclaiming, “Come on mama!” into the shaker cup as he shook the dice with the fervor of a man determined to win.
Farming was in his blood, a fact evidenced by his impressive collection of toy tractors—miniature reminders of the machinery that once plowed the fields of his youth. Bob also had a penchant for measuring life by how high the corn grew, a yardstick that grounded him, quite literally, in his rural roots.
A proud member of the Lions Club, Bob was known for his generosity of spirit and willingness to lend a helping hand or some levity, if need be. He was loved by all who had the pleasure of meeting him and was a great listener, which likely explains why so many secrets were whispered into his ears over the years.
Bob is preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Agnes Mitchell; his siblings, Francis, John, Mary, and Rose; and his son-in-law, John Giovannoni. Though they have gone before him, we're sure they're already working on their next family reunion in the hereafter.
Surviving Bob are his wife of 62 years, Sara Beth Mitchell, who stood by him through life's ups and downs like a trusty tractor on a bumpy field. His legacy continues with his children: Derek Mitchell and his wife Shannon, Christina Mitchell, and his beloved grandchildren, Katherine, Alex, Anna, and Margaret Mitchell. He also leaves behind his siblings, Tom, Margaret, and Alice Mitchell, along with countless friends and admirers who were touched by his warmth and humor.
Though Bob has left us, his spirit and laughter echo in every pun, every student he inspired, and every toy tractor wheel that turns. In the end, Bob leaves behind a world a little brighter than he found it, filled with laughter, kindness, and just the right amount of corn.
