J. Lee Hendricks, Jr.
May 21, 1943 — Sep 11, 2026
J. Lee Hendricks, Jr, passed away on September 11, 2026, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was born on May 21, 1943, in Amarillo, Texas, and before coming to Albuquerque, spent some time in Roswell, NM. Once in Albuquerque, NM, Mr. Hendricks attended Wilson Middle School, and graduated from Highland High School in 1963. After high school, he not only served our country in the US Navy, he attended the New Mexico State University. Mr. Hendricks will be remembered as a kindhearted, capable, and deeply engaging man whose interests and service brought enjoyment and connection to many.
Over the course of his working life, Mr. Hendricks devoted himself to both business and community. He ran the family business, Lee’s Paint & Hardware on Menaul, for several years, continuing a tradition of steady work and service. His career also included time with Eddie/Hammar Hardware ( Ace) and Phillips 66. In each setting, he was known not simply for what he did, but for the dependable and thoughtful way he did it.
He gave generously of his time as a volunteer, most notably serving at the Balloon Fiesta for 25 years. He also volunteered at the Domingo Baca Multi-Generation Center at the computer counter, sharing his knowledge and helping others with patience and ease. Tech savvy and approachable, he had a gift for making the complicated feel manageable, and for doing so with warmth.
Mr. Hendricks was also a man of lively interests and enduring enthusiasms. He was a model train enthusiast and worked on engine 2926 AT&SF (Atkinson Topeka , Santa Fe) Built 1944 , a pursuit that reflected both his curiosity and his appreciation for craftsmanship and history. He loved playing computer war games and was known as “The Commander” by rival game players, a nickname that spoke to both his skill and the spirited enjoyment he brought to the game. Above all, he will be remembered by many as the nicest person—someone whose decency, friendliness, and generous spirit left a lasting impression.
Mr. Hendricks is survived by his brother, Gary Hendricks and numerous cousins and friends: Gwen Naudau, Gordon Hendricks, Dwight Howard, Diana (Helm) Riha, Sonny Helm, Donnie Helm, Lana Sharp , Debbie Decker and Mike, Jay & Harry Gamers.
He was preceded in death by his father, J. Lee Hendricks, Jr., and his mother, Opal Helm. Their memory remained part of the foundation of his life, and now he rests in that company once more.
Those who knew J. Lee Hendricks, Jr., will remember a man who blended intelligence with humility, dedication with kindness, and enthusiasm with genuine goodwill. His life was marked by work, service, and the simple but profound grace of treating people well. He leaves behind the memory of a life honestly lived and warmly shared, and he will be deeply missed.
