Linda Cleland-Ortiz (Hughes)

Linda Cleland-Ortiz (Hughes), a beloved member of the Albuquerque community, passed away peacefully at her home on August 23, 2026, after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. Born on August 17, 1950, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Linda was the cherished daughter of Marlow Hughes and Waneta Labounty. She was predeceased by her parents and her sisters, Marlene Jill Hughes and Shirley Jean Winslow.

Linda's life was marked by dedication and love for both her family and her community. A proud graduate of Rio Grande High School in 1968, Linda embarked on a successful career as a legal secretary at a local law firm. Her professional journey continued as she brought her talents to Kirkland Air Force Base, where she retired after years of devoted service.

Linda was a woman of many passions, and her zest for life was infectious. She cherished her time spent with horses, at rodeos, camping, and fishing. Her enthusiasm for the outdoors was matched only by her dedication to the 4H community, where she was an avid supporter. Known for her creativity and generosity, Linda delighted the neighborhood children and her friends' families with her extravagant holiday decorations and the many Easter egg coloring parties she hosted over the years.

Linda is survived by her loving niece, Tracey Patchett, and her husband, Josh. Her legacy also lives on in her great-nephews, Mike White, Cody White and his wife Amy, Justin Patchett and his wife Mikayla, and Garrett Patchett. Her great-niece, Kyra Patchett, along with her great-great-nieces, Lily, Carli, Amelia (affectionately known as Millie, who shared Linda's birthday), and Ariah, and great-great-nephews, Cash and the soon-to-be-born Austin, will continue to carry forward Linda's spirit and love.

In accordance with Linda's wishes, no public services are planned at this time. The family will gather for a private celebration of her life at a later date. In this moment of reflection, the family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Ambercare Hospice for their compassionate care during Linda's final days, and to her kind and generous neighbors who provided support when the family could not be present.

Linda's family requests that any memorial contributions be made in her honor to a charity of your choice that supports cancer research or community services. Her life was a testament to kindness, love, and community spirit, and she will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
