Steven Samuel Gutierrez

Steven Samuel Gutierrez, age 67, beloved husband, father, brother, and friend, passed away unexpectedly in the evening hours of September 17, 2026.

Steven was born in 1959 in Socorro, New Mexico, and grew up surrounded by a large and loving family. He was one of eight children, with six brothers and one sister, and was blessed throughout his life with a large extended family of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Family was always important to Steven, and those relationships remained a meaningful part of who he was.

Steven was a quiet and humble man. He never needed to be the center of attention and was never one to ask for recognition. Instead, he showed his love in the simplest ways—by helping when someone needed him, by being present, and by quietly taking care of the people he loved. He had a gentle heart and a steady presence that made his family feel safe and loved.

Steven worked alongside his father and brother in the family surveying business for more than 20 years. Later, he worked for Albuquerque Public Schools before transferring to Los Lunas Public Schools, where he worked as a custodian. He retired in June 2022, much to the disappointment of the teachers and students who had grown so fond of him.

Those who knew Steven will probably remember one of his favorite jokes: he called himself a “Sanitation Engineer.” It was a simple phrase, but the way Steven said it always made his family laugh. It was one of those little things that made him uniquely Steven—and a memory his family will treasure.

Steven met his wife, Anna, at a prayer meeting at St. Edwin’s Catholic Church. Anna had prayed for a strong, God-fearing man who loved his Catholic faith and his Church. In Steven, she found that man. Together, they built a life centered around faith, family, and love.

Steven was a devoted husband and father. His children were a source of great pride and joy, and he loved being their dad. He recently had the beautiful honor of walking his eldest daughter down the aisle at her wedding in July. With his family gathered around him, he was able to share in one of those precious moments that a father hopes to experience. None of them could have known just how treasured that memory would become.

Steven was a devout Catholic, and a deeply prayerful man. In the years leading to his passing, his wife, Anna, witnessed a strong and steady growth in his faith, particularly in his devotion to Our Blessed Mother & the Holy Face devotional. His faith was an important and beautiful part of who he was.

Steven also had a love for motorcycles that brought him tremendous joy. He enjoyed working on his beloved Suzuki, taking it out for a ride, and searching for that perfect Tortoise Green paint color for his SL100 fixer-upper. He could spend great lengths talking motorcycles with Fr. Bibeau and Mr. Maez, sharing stories, ideas, and the simple happiness that came from something he loved.

But as much as Steven loved his motorcycles, his greatest joy was his family.

He was happiest when he was simply spending time with the people he loved, especially outdoors and surrounded by nature. He didn't need much to be content. A day with his family, time outside, a good conversation, or working on something with his hands was enough.

Steven's life was not defined by loud words or grand gestures. It was defined by quiet acts of love, faithfulness, hard work, humor, and the way he was always there for the people who mattered most.

He was a good man. A gentle man. A faithful husband. A loving father. And a man whose presence will be deeply missed.

There will be countless moments when his family will wish they could hear his voice, see his smile, hear him make one of his jokes, or simply have him sitting nearby. But they will carry him with them—in their memories, in their faith, in the lessons he taught them, and in the love he gave so freely.

Steven is survived by his beloved wife, Anna Gutierrez, and their seven children, Aaron, Isaiah, Matthew, Elijah, Victoria Gutierrez-Torres, Jonathan, and Hannah.

Though his time with them was far too short, the love Steven gave his family will remain with them for the rest of their lives.
