With profound sadness, the family announces the passing of Jose Leroy Guttierrez. A beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend. Jose passed away peacefully on May 29, 2026. Born on April 19, 1939, in Monte Vista, Colorado, Jose was a kind, loving, and generous spirit that touched the lives of so many people, those he knew and even those who were strangers passing by. Jose had a deep love for his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He spent his retired years spending time with his family, traveling to Las Vegas, New Mexico and Denver to play the slot machines. He loved watching his great-grandchildren play sports, gambling, fishing, hunting and dancing. He was an avid sports fan who cheered on the Broncos and Denver Nuggets.
Jose is survived by his loving daughter, Eva Sandoval, his brother, Robert (Betty) Gutierrez, his two grandchildren, Tess Sandoval and Tara Sandoval, and three great-grandchildren, Xavier Baca, Victoria Baca, Ayrton Krantz and many adored nieces and nephews. His legacy of love, generosity and kindness left behind will be carried on through each of them.
Jose was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Maggie Gutierrez, his loving wife, Berlinda Madrid, his dear son, Leo D. Sandoval, siblings, Dolores Gutierrez, Gilbert (Josephine) Gutierrez, Jake (Lucille) Gutierrez, Lorraine Gutierrez, Viola (Ike) Martinez, Oscar (Clara) Gutierrez, Luis (Neighbor) Jaramillo, and Pauline (Leroy) Jaramillo.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 25, 2026, at Sacred Heart Church in Alamosa, CO. The internment will immediately proceed at the Alamosa Municipal Cemetery located at 2200 State Ave., Alamosa, CO 81101. Reception to follow at the Knights of Columbus in Alamosa, CO
