Maria Lydia Sandoval
Jul 15, 1936 — Jul 11, 2020
Our Mom ,Grandma,Sister Aunt, and Friend , Maria Lydia Sandoval , Lilly or Lil is what she liked to be called, was a very sweet quiet lady but don't make her mad ,and watch out if you did , you can ask her bothers about that ! she had two older brothers and two younger brothers. In the middle of four brothers you have to be tough. She had a look when she was mad and all of us four kids and everybody else knew that look, and never ever wanted to get it. My brother Gerald knew it very well cause he was growing tomato plants in our back yard, but they were not tomato plants. After my Dad told her they were not tomato plants she bleached them. She taught us to be tough, with a gentle touch, loved us unconditionally and we never did anything wrong in her eyes. She not only taught us to work hard for what we needed and wanted, but led us by example. If we were wrong and didn't listen to her advice, she wouldn't kick us when we were down but she would pick us up, dust us off and send us back out to make it or break it . She always had our back no matter what .
Her door was always open to anybody who needed a place to live or something to eat and she always wanted to feed you . Everyone who met our mom felt like part of her family. If you were sick she would take care of you .
My Dad and her had a love hate relationship they fought as long as We can remember , but she missed him when he was gone . She would throw every clock my dad bought for her at him. She had a good aim, always hit him, never hit any of her kids. He stopped buying her clocks when she threw one at him that was plugged into the wall and flew back and almost hit herself.
She loved to go to the casinos , we think she was luckier than she thought and probably won more than what she thought. The last time she was there she won 1,500 dollars and didn't even know it. Lucky my sister Linda looked at her Machine and said,"mom you won" and cashed out .
She loved to go have lunch whenever she had money in her pocket. She would go everyday if she could. She loved to shop and buy shoes. We were shopping for shoes one week before she passed. In December of last year we found out she had frontal and temporal dementia, but she still remembered, if she had money, she wanted to get some shoes. We all told her she had enough shoes but she said they were out of style and uncomfortable. Needless to say we were out buying shoes, not one pair, but two because it was buy one get one half price.
She loved to read books and watch Grey's Anatomy. She was always ready to go and do whatever , but if she said no she didn't want to ,don't ask her twice because no was no !
She has been telling us her days are numbered for a few years now. I guess she was right again .
We're all going to miss her very much. She is survived by brother Ernie (aka Junior) sister in law Lucy Leyba, brother Richard Leyba and sister in laws Alice and Mary Leyba, children Gerald and Dixie Sandoval, Laura and David Wilson, Linda Sandoval , Susan and Alan Lucero, twelve Grandkids, and nine Great grand kids, and proceeded in death by her Husband Samuel Sandoval, Grandson Joseph Atencio Jr, Parents Ernesto and Lucy Leyba, brother Eli Leyba, brother Fernando Leyba and sister in law Shirley Leyba.
