Thomas John Dunstan

Dec 31, 1948 — May 29, 2026

Thomas John Dunstan, age 77, passed away peacefully in his sleep on May 29, 2026. He was born on December 31st, 1948 to Marie Dunstan (Coombe) & James Lloyd Dunstan.

Tom is survived by his children Katie (Jason) Chapman, Bridget (Cody) D’Angelo, his brothers Jay (Patty) Dunstan, and Jeff (Victoria) Dunstan.

He is proceeded in death by his parents Marie and James, his sisters Carolyn Starling and Sandra Curtis, and his loving wife Kathy Dunstan (Watson.)

Tom grew up in Royal Oak, jumping trains, terrorizing school administrators with crickets, working paper routes, and exercising his independent spirit from a young age.

He was enlisted in the Marines from 1971-1974 where he served as a Navy Systems Technician at the Hickam Air Force Base on Oahu, HI. Tom was honorably discharged with a National Defense Service Metal, Good Conduct Medal, and Rifle Expert Badge. He enjoyed recounting his time spent on the island and was a proud Marine the rest of his life.

When Tom returned he began working in the photo processing industry where he met Kathy. They quickly began dating and married on March 11th, 1978 in Detroit, MI.

Tom and Kathy bought a home in Bloomfield Hills that quickly became the default spot for many parties, gatherings, and holidays for family and friends alike. Winters by the fire and summers in the pool and by the pond, Tom & Kathy could always be relied upon for a great time with zero pretension.

Tom moved to Colorado in 2016 to be closer to his daughters, where he spent his later years exploring the National Parks in the Western United States.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, August 29th, 2026 in Royal Oak Michigan from 12pm-3pm. Join the family at you leisure for appetizers, drinks, and memory sharing at Jim Brady’s Royal Oak: 1214 S Main St, Royal Oak, MI 48067.
