Robert Holger Nielsen

December 27, 1958 — May 22, 2026

It is with deep sorrow and much love that we announce the passing of Robert H. Nielsen,

affectionately known as Bob, who departed this world on May 22, 2026, at the age of 67.

Born December 27,1958 in Pierre, South Dakota, Bob brought light to the lives of all who

knew him with his sense of humor, warm smile, and welcoming nature…he made everyone

feel valued and seen.

Bob was the cherished son of Clinton and Mary Ann Nielsen. He grew up surrounded by the

love of his family, forging bonds that would carry him through life. After graduating from T F

Riggs High School in 1977, Bob served his country with honor in the U. S. Army and spent a

tour in Germany. His service to the nation was marked by dedication and a steadfast spirit.

Bob’s professional journey was as varied and vibrant as his personality. He began his work

career as a farm/ranch hand, found success as a car salesman, and eventually a Used Car

Sales Manager for Beck Motor Company in Pierre. After relocating to Phoenix, AZ, he

pursued training as a surgical technician, a career he enjoyed until his retirement.

In Pierre, South Dakota he found his lifelong love, Barbara Hershly, whom he married June

27, 1987, building a home filled with laughter, joy, and love. Together Bob and Barb raised

two wonderful children, Daniel and Lacy, who were a source of pride and joy. His legacy

continues through his beloved granddaughters, Jaelynn and Ellie, who were a delight and

constant joy of his life.

Bob was a man of many passions. A lifelong Chicago Bears fan (he had a Chicago Bears

tattoo on his shoulder), he could often be found cheering enthusiastically for his team. He

relished the serenity of the great outdoors and the comradery of hunting and fishing with

friends. Whether riding his Harley along winding roads, enjoying a game of golf, or

jitterbugging on the dance floor, he embraced life with enthusiasm and a zest for adventure.

He was previously a member of Lutheran Memorial Church in Pierre, S.D. and served on the

board for a brief period of time. He was also a member of the American Legion and the Elks

Club. His ability to make friends wherever he went was a testament to his genuine friendly

nature. He was a truly loyal and great friend, always ready with a comforting word, a quick

joke, or a helping hand.

Bob is survived by his loving wife Barb, his son Daniel (Alisa), his daughter Lacy Fike and her

husband Brian, his granddaughters Jaelynn and Ellie, his sister Christie Zander (Paul); his

brothers, Mark Nielsen (Sheryl), and James Nielsen (Sharon); his mother-in-law Marilyn

Hershly, brother in law Brent Hershly (Heidi), sister in law Brenda Stadel (Mark). He leaves

behind numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins who will carry forward his memory and

spirit.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents Clinton and Mary Ann Nielsen and his father-in-law

William Hershly.

Bob was always the life of a party, and as such a celebration of Bob’s life will be held in

Chandler, AZ at Hob Nob (7200 W Chandler Blvd), Saturday, May 30, 2026, from 1 to 5 pm.

Bob will be laid to rest in the Black Hills National Cemetery on Thursday, June 4, 2026, at 11

am. A celebration of his life will also be held in Pierre, SD on Saturday, June 6 at the

Missouri River Event Center (217 W Missouri Ave.) from 3 to 7 pm, where family and friends

will gather to honor a life well lived and a man deeply loved.

Bob Nielsen will be remembered for his unwavering kindness, his ability to light up a room,

and the love he shared with everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. His spirit will

forever remain in the heart of those he touched.
