Eugene Robert Berwald

Jan 8, 1936 — Apr 21, 2026

Berwald, Eugene Robert "Gene", age 90, of White Bear Lake, passed away peacefully April 21, 2026 at home with family by his side. Despite facing an aggressive battle of Stage IV cancer, Christ was victorious over death, taking Gene to his heavenly home.

Preceded in death by his parents Erhardt and Dora Berwald; wife Geraldine Berwald; son David Berwald; Gerald and Margaret Krummel, Glen Berwald, Carol Andrus, Norman VanBlaricom, Snooks Krummel,  John Wahlberg, Diane Hanson and Lloyd Hanson, aunts, uncles, cousins, niece, and friends.

Survived by son William (Cathy) Berwald; daughter Deborah (Don) Reiter; daughter Barbara Berwald; daughter-in-law Lynne Berwald; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; sisters, brothers; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.

Born January 8, 1936 in Bertha, MN, Gene was raised by his parents Erhardt and Dora, along with his 7 siblings. In his younger years, Gene raised pigs, rabbits and chickens, selling the eggs in town, also working at Keindel's, the local grocery store. He married the love of his life, Geri, on August 23, 1957. While raising 4 children, Gene grew a multi-generational family business, Berwald Roofing and Sheet Metal, along with his brother Ken, started by his father in 1936. Being an admired and respected businessman, he worked diligently and daily, even past his 90th birthday. Gene's hobbies and passions included hunting, fishing and reading. Fishing was his way to put food on the table. He said you can't eat a golf ball, so he never took up golfing. Gene looked forward to Wednesday night trap shooting followed by dinner and a beer with the guys. Gene was an inspiration to all who knew him. He had an ear to listen and offered words of much appreciated advice. His selflessness and generosity knew no bounds. He was a man of strong faith, actively involved in his church and instilling spiritual importance in the hearts of his children. What a blessing to have been part of his life!
