Daryl Horst

Daryl Lynn Horst, 69, of Payette, Idaho died July 28, 2026. He was born June 3, 1957, in Saville, Ohio, the oldest son of the late Melvin and Eleanor (Burkhart) Horst.

On June 24, 1978, he married Carol Weaver. In addition to his wife; he is survived by their eight children: Deborra Horst of Payette Idaho; Lisa (Marc) Troyer of Great Falls, Montana; Bruce (Charity) Horst of Payette, Idaho; Andrea (Vern) Martin of Ontario, OR; Joshua( Harmony) Horst of Payette Idaho; Patricia (Marvin) Amendt of Grand Prairie, Alberta; Mary Horst of Payette, Idaho and Trevor Horst of Payette, Idaho and seventeen grandchildren; Jase, Xander, Caroline, Zoe and Beau Troyer, Eleanor, McKenzie, Hazel, and Emma Horst, Cortney, Zane, Tylor, Annalia, Nicole, Avery, and Joni Martin and Oliver Horst. Also surviving are five sisters: Janis (Mark) Reinford, Audrey (Ken) Brandt, JanaLou (Lowell) Beidler, Brenda (Michael) Martin, and Judith (Andrew) Klippenstein, and six brothers; Mark (Sarah) Horst, Dennis (Shana) Horst, Gerald (Mary) Horst, Galen (Rachel) Horst, Steven (Esther) Horst, and Kevin (Ruth) Horst.

For many years Columbiana, Ohio was home. As a child, he enjoyed life on the family farm and attended Sharon Mennonite School. He often talked of the days he worked for Wayne Bacon as a teenager. Eventually he opened his welding shop, Country Blacksmith. There he taught many young men to weld and enjoyed meeting the community as they came through his shop. When the family moved to Idaho in 1997, he realized his children enjoyed farming more than welding so Country Acres became his career. He enjoyed hauling cows and hay with his sons. On days he hauled cattle, he especially enjoyed visiting with people while waiting at the corrals. It didn’t matter if it was a ranching acquaintance or the grandchild that got to come along that day. Mornings he had to drive truck were best when they started with his favorite breakfast of corned beef hash. For the last year and a half his dog, Rusty, was his inseparable companion whether they were swathing, trucking, or mowing grass at home.

He loved God and was a member of the Payette Mennonite Church. It was his desire that all would know God and be faithful. He served as a school board chairman for many years. He always enjoyed the school children and would often comment, “That’s a nice group of children.”

Over the years they opened their home for many who needed a place to stay, whether it was through foster care, a school teacher, or a nephew or niece that came to work. Dad loved evenings where the backyard was full of family and friends gathered for a picnic. He was building a collection of old tractors that he planned to redo when he retired. He enjoyed giving rides to his children and grandchildren even if the paint wasn’t fresh.
