Gail Sunderland

June 9, 1948 — May 28, 2026

Gail Sunderland, 77, of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on May 28, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on June 9, 1948, to the late Bennett and Phyllis Spear. Gail graduated from Masconomet Regional High School in Massachusetts in 1966. She went on to earn an associate degree in retail merchandising from Westbrook Junior College in Maine. Gail began her career as a flight attendant for Eastern Airlines based in New York City. It was there that she met the love of her life Terry Sunderland. They married in Topsfield, Massachusetts and moved back to his home town of Los Angeles, California. They began their life together and welcomed two daughters. In the years that followed, they moved back to her hometown and welcomed their son, before ultimately settling in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

After raising her children as a deeply devoted mother, Gail returned to the workforce. She spent over 20 years working in retail at the Harbour Town Golf Links Pro Shop. During her two decades there, she formed deep bonds with many coworkers and visitors who quickly became family. She was known for welcoming all who had no where to go to spend Thanksgiving, Christmas and all birthdays and holidays with our family. We cherish these memories to this day  ♥

Gail was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Terry Sunderland. She is survived by her three children: Tara Elliott of Raleigh, North Carolina; Tanya (Keven) Casatelli of Clayton, North Carolina; and Todd (Monica) Sunderland of Bluffton, SC. She is also survived by her six cherished grandchildren: Jack Elliott, Alex (Morgan) Casatelli, Ben Casatelli, Sarah Casatelli, Sam Sunderland, and Stella Sunderland; her two precious great grandchildren, Clara and Macie Casatelli; and her lifelong devoted family friend, Andre de Gunzburg.

Gail will be remembered for her fierce love and devotion to her family, her friends, and her animals. She possessed a keen sense of style and fashion, always looking her absolute best, even for a simple trip to the grocery store. She leaves behind a legacy of strength, warmth, and beautiful memories that will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
