June Ann Arteberry

Jun 9, 1934 — Oct 21, 2026

June Ann Arteberry, 92, of Hilton Head, SC, died peacefully in her home on October 21, 2026.

June was born on June 9, 1934, in Rockford, IL, to Edith and Arnold Gustafson. An only child, June grew up surrounded by loving parents and extended family in a close-knit Swedish-American community. She cherished summer trips to Delavan Lake, WI, and evenings playing outdoors with her friends. Those evening games led to a lifelong love of athletics. In sixth grade, June joined the Rockford Koeds, an all-female baseball team and farm team for the renowned Rockford Peaches. June played with the Koeds until her third year of college, when the women’s professional baseball league disbanded in 1954.

June attended MacMurray College in Jacksonville, IL, and graduated with a degree in physical education. While teaching PE in St. Louis, MO, she met Gardner “Art” Arteberry, who had recently returned from the army and was starting a career with Dow Chemical Company. She fell in love with the tall, curly-haired, good-natured man, and they got married. They had three children – Nancy, David, and Chris – and many wonderful adventures as a family, moving from St. Louis to New Jersey to Midland, MI, to Tokyo to Kansas City to London. During those years, June devoted her time to being a wife and a mother, developing cherished friendships, and excelling at golf, tennis, and bowling.

After Art’s retirement, June and Art divided their time between Kansas City and Bonita Springs, FL, where June continued to develop friendships, nurture grandchildren, and enjoy athletic pursuits. She began a career with Talbots, where she pursued her natural love of fashion by helping women find just the right outfits to give them confidence and style.

After Art’s death in 2014, June reconnected with an old friend, Joseph K. “Jo” Banks, Jr., and they remained partners until her death. June and Jo, along with their beloved dog Katey, enjoyed living in Savannah, GA, St. Simons Island, GA, and Hilton Head, SC.

June was a true people person and had a way of making everyone feel special. She created a beautiful home and, while never claiming to be a good cook, loved entertaining guests – from gourmet groups to yearly Fourth of July parties to expat Christmases abroad. She had a special connection with Yogi, the family dog, and a passion for black licorice, gummy bears, and fast cars.

June was preceded in death by her husband, Gardner Arteberry. She is survived by her children, Nancy Arteberry (Jim Richards), of Savannah, GA, David Arteberry (Michelle), of Leawood, KS, and Chris Arteberry (Cristine Wright), of San Francisco, CA; her grandchildren, David J. “Joey” Jilk (Lauren), Thomas Jilk (Hannah), Samuel Arteberry (Elizabeth), Noah Arteberry, Anna Wright, and Nicholas Arteberry; her great-grandchildren, Josué Jilk of Granada, Nicaragua, and Lillian Arteberry of Roeland Park, KS; and her longtime partner, Joseph K. Banks, Jr.

The family will have a private memorial service. Those who wish to honor June's memory may make a donation in her name to Church of the Resurrection, Attn: Finance, 13720 Roe Ave, Leawood, KS 66224
