James Philip Nangle

James Philip Nangle died peacefully on August 16, 2026, in Hollywood, SC. Jim was born January 30, 1936, in Danvers, MA, to the late Joseph Daniel Nangle and Madaline Barry Nangle. He was one of five children.

Jim's father was a police officer in Danvers and retired as the Chief of Police. Jim's mother raised her children and had a small, successful flower business: she raised her flowers in a greenhouse behind their home and sold them from a stand in front of their home. Jim attended St. John's Preparatory High School in Danvers, MA, graduating in 1954. Jim enlisted in the United States Air Force after high school, where his title was "Special Weapons Maintenance Technician." He was honorably discharged after 4 years. Jim then attended and graduated from Merrimac College in North Andover, MA.

Jim raised his family with Dolores (Cabral) Nangle in Salem, MA, where he was an active member of Jubilee Yacht Club and the North Shore Frogmen's Club. He later lived in Randolph, MA. Jim married Patricia R. Cooke, in 1984 and together they relocated to South Carolina, and lived in Mount Pleasant, Sheldon, Beaufort, and Hollywood. Jim, together with Pat, the love of his life, found many ways to enjoy the outdoors and volunteer in the community.

An engineer by nature and by profession, he was a member of the Itek team that developed the Viking cameras that went to Mars and later, in retirement, repaired donated items at Habitat for Humanity Re-Store. He took pride in troubleshooting and problem-solving. Jim was an avid outdoorsman, who loved hunting, fishing, boating, golfing, and exploring. Jim loved travelling and photography. Jim was also an active volunteer, devoting a lot of time to projects and programs near and dear to his heart, including EIOLT, Botany Bay, and various animal rescue groups. A lifelong learner, he earned his Master Naturalist Certification through Clemson Cooperative Extension while in his 70s. Jim will be remembered for his dry wit and attention to detail. He leaves behind a legacy his family and friends will carry forward: be curious, appreciate nature, and embrace the sense of wonder.

Jim was predeceased by his 4 siblings (Susan E. Bartnicki, Joseph D. Nangle, Barry P. Nangle, Marie E. Webb), wife Patricia R. Cooke, son-in-law Richie Chiruna, and stepson Peter A. Cooke.Jim is survived by his four daughters: Christine and Jim Houser of Hollywood, SC, Rosemary Nangle Seyfried of Marblehead, MA, Sharon and Joe Conley of Hernando Beach, FL, and Vanessa L’Abbe of Danvers, MA, and his two stepchildren: Catharine-Cooke Chiruna of Haverhill, MA, and James and Eileen Cooke of Mansfield, Ma. His dog, Pixie, remains grateful for the walks and special snacks. He will also be missed by his many nieces and nephews, grandchildren (Madeline Seyfried Hinson, Margaret Seyfried Smith, Eleanor Seyfried, Isobel Seyfried, Joshua L'Abbe, Rich Chiruna Jr, Steven Chiruna, Chris Chiruna, Carolyn Gilmore, Michael Davidson, Ashley Cooke, Peter Cooke Jr, Alissa Cooke, and Ethan Cooke ) and great-grandchildren (Brielle Hinson, Knox Hinson, Chloe Chiruna, Steven Chiruna, Abigail Bosader, Caroline Bosader, Morgan Chiruna, Maddalena Davidson).

The family would like to thank the caring staff at Family Hospice for tender and loving care, especially in the last week of Jim's life.A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date.
