Margaret Reeves Steen
July 12, 1941 — June 12, 2026
Margaret Reeves Steen, 84, of Cottageville, South Carolina, entered into eternal rest, on Friday June 12, 2026, peacefully at her home.
Born on July 12, 1941, in Walterboro, South Carolina, Margaret was the daughter of the late Mercer Reeves and Evelyn Reeves. She spent her entire life in Cottageville, a town she dearly loved and where she built a life centered on faith, family, and community. Her love for Cottageville was evident in her service to the town, proudly serving as Mayor on two separate occasions and working to support the community she called home.
Margaret earned her associate degree and worked as a bookkeeper in various roles throughout her career. She approached life with determination, resilience, and an unwavering spirit. A longtime member of Cottageville Baptist Church, she valued the friendships and sense of community it provided throughout her life. She was known for her strength, independence, and determination.
Margaret is survived by her beloved husband of forty-four years, Jim Steen; her sons, John Smoak (Mishele) and Kevin Steen (Hope); and her son-in-law, Chuck Hudson. She was preceded in death by her cherished daughter, Kristi Hudson.
She also leaves behind her grandchildren, Reeves Smoak, Tadd Smoak, Fuller Smoak, Matt Smoak, Will Smoak, Kyle Cook, Kaitlyn Cook, Julia Hudson, Shawn Steen, and Trenton Steen, along with nine great-grandchildren who brought immeasurable joy to her life.
While her family mourns her passing, they find comfort in knowing that she is at peace and reunited with loved ones who have gone before her. Her legacy lives on through the family she loved deeply, the community she served, and the many lives she touched throughout her eighty-four years.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made in Margaret's memory to Friends of Colleton County Animal Shelter, 33 Poor Farm Road, Walterboro, South Carolina 29488.
The family will receive friends at Cottageville Baptist Church on Saturday, July 11, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. until 2:30 p.m., with a memorial service celebrating Margaret's life immediately following from 2:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m.
