Martin David Boyer
Apr 30, 1943 — Aug 11, 2026
Martin David Boyer
Martin David Boyer of Goose Creek, South Carolina, known to many as Dave and to many others as “Pastor Dave” went home to be with the Lord on August 11, 2026 at the age of 83, after a long, courageous battle with cancer. A man of unwavering discipline, deep faith, and generous spirit, Dave lived a life defined by service to his Lord, his country, his community and his family.
Dave was born April 30, 1943, in Cresson Pennsylvania, a small town nestled in the mountains, where he spent his boyhood fishing and hunting rabbits. Those early years shaped him into the avid sportsman he would remain for the rest of his life, the outdoors being a sanctuary where he found peace and happiness.
After graduating from high school in May of 1963, Dave enlisted in the United States Navy and married his high school sweetheart, Mary P. Smith. Thus began a distinguished military career that spanned from 1963-1990. He rose through the ranks to become a Command Master Chief, receiving many commendations along the way, achieving the rank of FTC. His time of service instilled in him the qualities of leadership, respect, and discipline that defined everything he did.
After being stationed in Charleston SC, Dave put down roots in the Lowcountry, joining a local fishing club, competing in fishing tournaments and becoming a local fishing guide. A skilled hunter, he enjoyed hunting turkey, deer, wild hogs and an occasional fox.
Before retiring from the Navy, Dave was already building his next chapter. In May1988 he opened Boyers Boat Repair, a business that he ran until June 2008. His expertise in fiberglass work went beyond boats, extending to any fiberglass-related jobs, tackling all with his strong work ethic and can-do attitude.
Dave's life took on yet another meaningful turn when he attended The Chapel of the Holy Spirit and subsequently The Cathedral Bible College, obtaining a bachelor’s degree in theology and becoming an ordained minister and associate pastor in May 1997. His passion for teaching and helping others found its fullest expression through his pastoral work. He taught Sunday school and bible college courses, eagerly sharing the word with anyone desiring to listen. He became a full-time Pastor at Gateway Community church in February 2004 where he established a local food bank through Gateway Open Arms to help feed those in need, known today as "Hunger Helpers". He also partnered Gateway Community Church with Angel Tree Ministries to serve underprivileged children in the community. He officially retired from Gateway Community Church in February 2017 but continued to serve in an unofficial capacity for years after.
His faith in Christ was the cornerstone of his life, and he carried that faith with grace, generosity and love for the people around him. His deep love for Christ guided his steps as a sailor, a businessman, a teacher and a pastor, he now rests in the arms of his Lord and Savior, at eternal peace, having left behind a legacy and a lasting impact on countless lives.
He is preceded in death by his father, Martin Bentz Boyer, his mother, Mildred M. Boyer, wife, Mary P. Boyer, son Martin Paul Boyer, and sister Marion Ellis. He is survived by his loving wife Charlotte N. Boyer, his daughters Christine Boyer Oliver and Michelle Ann Bradley, grandchildren Matthew M. Oliver, Jeromy A. Oliver (Jessica) Gary L. Bradley, Michael D. Bradley, Kimberly Ann Bradley (Shawn McGrew) 16 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren. He will be deeply missed by all knew and loved him.
A celebration of his life will be held on August 29th at 3:00pm at Gateway Community Church, located at 3537 South Live Oak Drive, Moncks Corner SC 29461. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to Gateway Open Arms / Hunger Helpers, or Hollings Cancer Center. All are welcome to gather to honor this remarkable man who gave so much of himself to others.
