Douglas Lee Maurer

Dec 27, 1957 — Oct 12, 2026

Douglas Lee Maurer, 68, of Summerville, passed away October 12, 2026.  He was born December 27, 1957 in Battle Creek, Michigan to Melvin and Betty (Willerick) Maurer.  Douglas was a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, cherished brother, and a once-in-a-lifetime kind of man. He was a man who loved deeply, worked hard, gave selflessly, and made life better for the people fortunate enough to know him. His presence was a blessing, and his memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who loved him.

Douglas dedicated over 25 years of hard work and service to the South Carolina State Ports Authority. He took pride in providing for his family, and he did so with a generous heart and without a selfish bone in his body. To him, family was everything. He worked hard not for recognition, but because caring for the people he loved was simply who he was.The greatest love of Douglas’s life was his wife, Gloria, with whom he shared 49 beautiful years of marriage. Their love story began when they were teenagers, and from the beginning, they knew they could never imagine life apart. Through the years, their bond remained a beautiful testament to a love that grows deeper with time. Gloria was his partner, his best friend, and his great love, and the life they built together was one of his greatest treasures.Douglas’s daughter, Sara, and her family brought him immeasurable joy and kept him young at heart. He adored his son-in-law, Michael, and his grandchildren, Asher and Stella, who held a special place in his heart. Watching his family grow and sharing in their lives brought him happiness beyond measure. The love he had for them was unconditional, and the memories they created together will be treasured forever.Douglas had a wonderful sense of humor and a gift for finding joy in the simple things. He loved a good joke, a silly story, and a classic mobster movie. He enjoyed playing solitaire and anything that challenged his mind, always eager to keep his brain engaged. He valued meaningful conversations and the kind of connections that went beyond small talk. He was someone who would do anything for anyone, offering his time, his help, and his heart without hesitation.

Those who knew Douglas will remember not only how hard he worked, but how generously he loved. He was the kind of man who showed up, who provided, who listened, who made people laugh, and who gave more of himself than he ever asked in return. He did not need grand gestures to show his love; it was woven into the everyday ways he cared for the people around him. His life was a reminder that the greatest legacy a person can leave is the love they give and the lives they touch.Douglas is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Gloria Maurer; his daughter, Sara Lamon; his son-in-law, Michael Lamon; and his cherished grandchildren, Asher and Stella Lamon. He is also survived by his brothers, Stan Maurer; Danny Willerick and his sisters, Laura Baldauf; Gale Godfrey; and many beloved nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.He was preceded in death by his mother, Betty Willerick; his father, Melvin Maurer; his stepfather, Daniel Willerick; his brothers, Rufus Potter and Tom Willerick; his sister, Clara Edward; and his brother-in-law, Lee Edwards.

Though our time with Douglas was never long enough, we are profoundly grateful for the years we were blessed to share with him. The love he gave, the laughter he created, the lessons he taught, and the memories he leaves behind will remain with us always. His absence leaves a space that can never truly be filled, but his love will continue to surround us in the stories we tell, the laughter we share, and the family he cherished so deeply.Douglas Lee Maurer was truly a once-in-a-lifetime man. We were blessed to have him in our lives, honored to love him, and forever changed by the time we had with him. He will be deeply missed, endlessly loved, and never forgotten.
