In Loving Memory of Johari Renee’ Backman

Johari Renee’ Backman, affectionately known as “JoJo,” was born on January 4, 1996, in Norfolk, Virginia. She departed this life on July 31, 2026, at the age of 30.

Johari was a beautiful, strong, and remarkable woman whose presence brought love and joy to those who knew her. She was blessed with an amazing smile and a wonderful sense of humor that could brighten a room. Her strength, resilience, and the woman she became were a constant source of pride to her mother.

After graduating from high school, Johari moved to New Jersey to live with her father and his family. Her journey later took her to Virginia and eventually to Saint Paul/Minneapolis, Minnesota, where she made her home for more than seven years following her participation in the Job Corps program.

Johari had many interests and passions that made her uniquely herself. She loved fashion and makeup, enjoyed playing video games, and was an avid fan of the K-Pop group BTS. She also shared a special bond with her beloved cat, Nora, who loved being rubbed and will surely miss her dearly.

To her mother, Regina, Johari was so much more than a daughter. She was her only child—her “one button,” the answer to a prayer, and one of the greatest blessings of her life. Regina often said that Johari was evidence of an answered prayer. Although distance sometimes separated them, they remained close, talking every day and sharing a bond that went far beyond that of mother and daughter. They were family, but they were also friends.

Johari leaves to cherish her memory her loving mother, Regina Backman; her father, Steffoncio Pettiford (Solisa); her sister, Zakeya Pettiford; her brother, Trey Pettiford; and a host of extended family members, friends, and loved ones whose lives were touched by her presence.

Johari will be remembered for her beautiful smile, her humor, her strength, her individuality, and the love she gave to those closest to her. Though her time on earth was far too short, the memories she created and the love she shared will remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

Her mother is forever grateful for the gift of being Johari’s mother and for the privilege of calling her not only her daughter, but her friend. Rest peacefully, JoJo. You are forever loved, you are missed, and you will forever be your mother’s one and only button.
