Joyce Roach Hickman
Sep 23, 1933 — Oct 23, 2026
Joyce Tildia Roach Hickman “Booma” died on Friday, October 23, 2026. She was born September 23, 1933 in Anderson, SC to L.D. and Orene Roach and lived with her aunts and uncles after the untimely death of her father. Mrs. Hickman graduated as Valedictorian of T.L. Hanna High School and received a full scholarship to Erskine College majoring in English. Following her marriage to Reverend Dr. Walter E. Hickman, Jr., she continued her education at Baptist College of Charleston, now Charleston Southern College. There she received credentials to teach kindergarten, which she did in Charleston, SC and Huntersville, NC.
Moving to Florence, SC, Mrs. Hickman was an active field director for the Girl Scouts of America. As such she helped set up troops and trained scout leaders in and around South Carolina. Following retirement, she and her husband moved to Summerville, SC where she worked diligently and received Master Gardener certification. Mrs. Hickman used her skills and knowledge of the African American History in the Carolinas to become a docent at Middleton Place Plantation. She achieved all this while supporting her husband in his ministerial duties and raising a family of five very active children.
Following the death of her husband, Mrs. Hickman moved to the Village of Summerville Presbyterian Retirement Community where she remained an active resident serving as a hall representative to the Resident Council.
Mrs. Hickman was predeceased by her husband, Rev. Dr. Walter E. Hickman, Jr. and daughter, Stephanie Hickman Long. She is survived by four children, Walter E. Hickman III (Deb), Mark Hickman (Sarah), Tim Hickman, and Joyce Susie Hickman Hamm, eight grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
A private family memorial will be held at a later date.
