In Loving Memory of Juanita “Nita” Stewart Thelen

June 30, 1945 – October 11, 2026

Juanita “Nita” Stewart Thelen, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away surrounded by loved ones on October 11, 2026, at the age of 81.

Born on June 30, 1945, in Moncks Corner, South Carolina, Nita spent much of her life throughout the South Carolina Lowcountry, a place she called home. Throughout her lifetime, she built multiple successful flooring and decorating businesses, demonstrating her determination, entrepreneurial spirit, and ability to turn her ambitions into reality. She also ran a horse polo club and spent a great deal of time with horses, reflecting another of her passions. Eventually, Nita retired to Round O, South Carolina, where she spent the remainder of her days.

Nita was a woman who lived life on her own terms. Proudly describing herself as a “recluse,” she found comfort in the simple pleasures of home. Whether she was crocheting, watching her beloved Hallmark movies, or getting caught up in an episode of Forensic Files or Golden Girls, she knew how to enjoy her own company. But for all the time she loved spending at home, there was one thing she would never turn down: time with the people she loved. Her family held a special place in her heart, and she was the kind of person who would do anything for the people who mattered to her. Her love was shown not only through her presence, but through the countless ways she cared for those around her.

Above all, Nita leaves behind a legacy of family, love, and memories that will continue to live on through the generations she helped shape. To those closest to her, she was more than a mother or “Granny”. She was a source of love, comfort, and familiarity, a person whose presence helped make a house feel like home. The lessons she taught, the moments she shared, and the love she gave will remain with her family long after her passing.

Nita was preceded in death by her former husband, John Leo Thelen, who also passed away in 2026, and her two brothers, Louis Stewart and Jeb Stewart.

She is survived by her two sons, John David Millwater and Alexander Matthew Millwater; her three grandchildren, Madison Michelle Millwater, Alexander Matthew Millwater Jr., and Macie Millwater; and her sister, Deborah Stewart. She also leaves behind an extended family on both sides, along with many loved ones and friends whose lives were made better by having known her.

Special recognition is given to Jody Stewart, the wife of Nita’s late brother, Louis Stewart, who was not only family but also Nita’s best friend. Jody stood by her side and helped care for her toward the end of her life, offering love, companionship, and support when it mattered most. The friendship they shared was a special bond, and Jody’s kindness and devotion will always be remembered and deeply appreciated by those who loved Nita, and subsequently love her.

Though Nita may have preferred the quiet comforts of home, the love she leaves behind is anything but quiet. Her memory will live on in the hearts of her children, grandchildren, sister, extended family, and all those fortunate enough to have shared in her life. She will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.

A Celebration of Life will be held on October 25, 2026, to honor and remember Nita and the life she lived. For additional details, or to send flowers please contact Maddie at 843-408-8124.
